    1. [ENG-WESTMORLAND] Ambleside Herald & Lakes News 30 Mar 1883 Death of Thomas Walker
    2. David Leverton
    3. Hello All, Subject to any further requests for details from my index of deaths in the Ambleside newspaper, I am now finished my postings on this topic. Looks like a white Christmas coming here in Vancouver :) Ambleside Herald & Lakes News Issue 158 30 Mar 1883 Page 4 Death of THOMAS WALKER Another Fatal Accident at the Pillar Rock - A Whitehaven Youth Killed On Good Friday afternoon a very sad accident happened at the Pillar Rock, near Ennerdale and a young man named THOMAS WALKER, aged 17 years, stepson of Mr. J.B. Hodgson of Catherine Street, Whitehaven, lost his life. WALKER was serving his time as a chemist and druggist with Messrs. Wilson and Kitchin, of Whitehaven. About a month ago he and four of his companions - DAVID BURNS, plumber, Duke Street, Whitehaven; WILLIAM THORNBER, engine fitter, Tangier Street, Whitehaven; JAMES ATKINSON, grocer, Whitehaven, and THOMAS LOWERY, shoemaker King Street, Whitehaven - looking forward to a pleasant holiday on Good Friday agreed to walk from Whitehaven and spend the day among the mountains near Ennerdale, and make the ascent of the celebrated Pillar, which has been the scene of not a few melancholy accidents. The inquest was held before Mr. W.W. LUMB, deputy coroner, at MR. WEEK's inn at the Boathouse, Ennerdale, last Saturday. WILLIAM THORNBER was one of the witnesses examined and had this to say: We left Whitehaven about eight o'clock on Good Friday morning, and walked to Ennerdale, where we got a boat and rowed to the top of the lake. We then set out to walk to the Pillar, which will be about four miles from the head of the lake. The snow was lying in drifts, but WALKER knew the road. He had been before in the summer time, and was then at the top of the rock. He was our leader as we did not know the road or anything about the place. When we got up the mountain near the Pillar, we saw two gentlemen in front trying to get up the rock. They shouted to us to tell them the easiest way to get up the rock. WALKER, who was only a short distance off them, told them to go further round and then they would be able to ascend. WALKER was then twelve or fourteen yards below us, with his coat over one arm and a stick in his hand and he said to us "I think I'll slide down to that ledge and get on to the rock", pointing to a ledge of rock about 20 yards or so lower down. These were the last words we ever heard from him. He started away down and went at a frightful rate. He seemed to make a grab in going down at the rocks but he could not stop, and then he fell right down the gulley. We were in a terrible way. We didn't know how to get down. The gentlemen we had seen in front told us they would help us, and suggested that we should go round by Black Snail Pass, which is about five miles round. We had several times to lie and slide down and after about two hours hard work we got up to the spot where the body was. It was lying at the base of the rock He was quite dead. There was a great hole in the back of his head and one of his arms swung about at the shoulder and it must have been broken; his hands and fingers were also all torn awfully. His coat was gone, and one of his boots had been torn off his foot. Had it not been for the kindness of the two gentlemen who went with us I am sure some others of us would have been killed. They were two gentlemen from Lancashire, belonging to an Alpine Club and one of them said he had never had such stiff climbing before. We were all nearly knocked up when we got the body. We carried it down the mountain as well as we could, but we had hard work on account of the snow and the rocks. Sometimes we were compelled to lay him down and let him roll down the hill. At last when we got him down to some big rocks, we had to leave him there. The gentlemen who had been so kind to us were staying at Wasdale, and they had fifteen miles of walking to do from where we were. They went their way and we went to Gillerthwaite farm, near the head of Ennerdale Lake. I think it would be about three o'clock in the afternoon when Walker fell, and it would be quite half past five when we found his body. We dared not remain with it as we were afraid of being lost in the darkness. When we got to Gillerthwaite, MRS. TYSON was very kind and made us some tea, and three or four men with dogs and lamps set out to find the body and bring it. They did not find him until nearly midnight. Information was given to Police constable SPEDDING, at Ennerdale about 10 o'clock the same night of the accident and he took a boat and brought the body to the Boathouse Inn about three or four o'clock on Saturday morning. Jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death". We understand that the two tourists referred to in the above narrative whose exertions to find the body are spoken of with the greatest praise were Mr. G.F. SMITH and Mr. ROBERT LORD, junr. of Bolton-le-Moors. David Leverton Leverton, Stevens, Clibborn, Dodgson, Hird, Stalker ulpha@telus.net

Death of Mr. THOMAS WILLAN of Sawrey MR. WILLAN who has for a great number of years filled many important offices in Sawrey and district departed this life last Friday morning from mortification. Only some four weeks ago he cut his big toe and neglected attending to it until compelled by inflamation to seek rest. Ultimately mortification set in and after great suffering he expired. He was 66 years of age. In early life MR. WILLAN was a schoolmaster. Stern and firm in demeanor, he had a warm heart and was a true friend. His remains were interred at Sawrey last Sunday amidst a large concourse of friends and mourners. REV. S. HARTLEY is his sole executor. 3. Ambleside Herald & Lakes News Issue 110 28 APR 1882 Page 4 Murder Suicide Shocking Tragedy Near Appleby - Murder and Suicide The inhabitants of the ancient and usually quiet borough of Appleby and neighbourhood were, on Saturday last, thrown into a state of considerable excitement through a report being freely circulated that at woman had been shot dead, and that the murderer had himself committed suicide. The rumour, alas, proved too true, and the sad event has been the subject of grave conversation, in fact the almost absorbing topic of the day throughout the Vale of the Eden since the terrible occurrence took place. The tragedy, which is one of the most melancholy and distressing that has occurred in Westmorland during the present century, happened about three o'clock in the afternoon at the little hamlet of Burrells, about two miles from the county town. The family in which the sad affair took place, we may state, consisted of two brothers, named JOHN and THOMAS WAISTELL (the last named being the murderer), an older half-brother, called MATTHEW BURRA, and HANNAH WILSON, their housekeeper (the murdered woman). The house in which the dreadful tragedy was enacted is the second on the right hand side of the highway leading between Appleby and Kendal; it is situate close by the roadside and to the passer-by it presents the appearance of a quiet and unassuming farmstead. The facts connected with the tragic event are very brief. About three o'clock on Saturday afternoon, the housekeeper and THOMAS WAISTELL had a quarrel in the kitchen of the farmhouse, respecting a matter of very trivial import. The brother of the murderer was the only other occupant of the house at the time; but unfortunately, he is not able to stir about very quickly, being afflicted with rheumatism, so that he was unable to prevent the dreadful affair which ensued. The murderer, it appears, was of an excitable temperament and occasionally worked himself up into such a violent rage that he had often to be restrained by his elder half-brother. He was, however, of sober and industrious habits, but was of a somewhat weak intellect, the incoherent manner in which he often conducted himself having frequently attracted the attention of those who were acquainted with him. On this occasion he took umbrage at a mere trifle, and, on its being hinted by the housekeeper that he was not sane, he became very much exasperated, got up his double barrelled muzzle-loader, and fired two shots, the first missing the object of his aim through the gun being diverted by his brother John. The housekeeper then fled from the house, but she had not proceeded many yards, before the desperate man fired a second shot, and this time with fatal effect. He then ran down a field at the back of the house, and, entering what is known as the Lime Kiln Close, endeavoured to put an end to his existence by shooting himself. When found he was suffering the most intense pain, his cries being heard all over the village. Medical assistance was sent for immediately after the woman was shot; but on the arrival of DR. DINWOODIE and his assistant, and DR. DICKSON of Appleby, the woman was breathing her last, and the murderer did not live many hours after her. In his dying moments he confessed to committing the murder, and to shooting himself, and passed away with the prayer on his lips "O God, have mercy on me!" An inquest was held on both bodies Monday. 1. [ENG-WESTMORLAND] PENRITH HERALD and East Cumberland and Westmorland News, Saturday, January 10, 1874 / WEST WARD UNION MEETING
    2. Barb Baker
    3. No. 434. Second Week in Quarter. Registered for Transmission Abroad. Price One Penny ______________________________________________________ WEST WARD UNION. The Guardians of the West Ward Union held their fortnightly meeting at Eamont Bridge Workhouse on Wednesday afternoon. In the absence of MR. JAMES ATKINSON (the chairman), MR. JAMESON was called upon to preside. The ex officio members present were REV. W. R. MARKHAM, REV. G. F. WESTON, and REV. S. WHITESIDE. There was a fair attendance of elected Guardians. _____________________________________________________ ANOTHER TURN IN THE WORKHOUSE TROUBLE. The CLERK said MESSRS. CORY and FERGUSON, architects of Carlisle, had, as requested, furnished a plan of the alterations in and additions to the old workhouse, together with all necessary information. The CHAIRMAN said having now before them the site for the workhouse in a clear and intelligible form, the next thing was to consider how much was to be paid for it. The land required was computed to be 1 acre and 1,420 square yards, and for this £150 an acre would have to be paid, and for the present building would cost £779. The original agreement was that the Board was to take the farm buildings behind the old house, and for these MR. COWPER was to be allowed £577. This arrangement was made about two years ago; but since that time MR. COWPER had become rather infirm, and instead of erecting the farm buildings himself, he would rather that the Board found the materials and put up the buildings for him. MR. JOHN LONGRIGG thought it was time to give up altogether if they could not get a site without going to work to erect an expensive block of buildings for another person. MR. IRVING objected to expending the ratepayer's money in such a manner. A general feeling was expressed against entertaining MR. COWPER's request, and a deputation, consisting of MR. JAMESON, REV. G. F. WESTON, and CAPTAIN MARKHAM, were appointed to wait upon MR. COWPER in reference to the subject. ANOTHER DIFFICULTY. A communication was read from the Local Government Board concerning the plans of the new Vagrant Wards at Shap. They were desirous of ascertaining whether the premises which were formerly occupied by the Guardians of the West Ward Union for that purpose could not again be used in the same way. In reply to a question, the CHAIRMAN said that LORD LONSDALE had not withdrawn his offer of a site for a Vagrant Ward at Shap. After a long and somewhat animated discussion, it was decided to obtain the information required by the Local Government Board and trasmit to London, the question as to the desirability of the building for a Vagrant Ward being left over for further consideration. The Guardians then resolved themselves into a sanitary authority, the places reported upon being Great Strickland and Shap, and the alterations suggested were ordered to be carried. ______________________________________________________ PENRITH. A largely-attended meeting of the Guardians of this Board was held in the Public Offices, Sandgate, on Tuesday afternoon last. MR. W. HARRISON presided. After the out-door relief cases were disposed of, the Board proceeded to consider the proposal made by the Local Government Board (with the view of giving two additional guardians for the parish of Hesket-in-the Forest, without increasing the total number of guardians for the union), to unite the three small parishes of Bowscale, Hutton John, and Mosedale, to adjoining parishes, for the purpose of the election of guardians. MR. W. LONGRIGG proposed that Mosedale and Mumgrisdale, be made into one district, and that Hutton John be attached to Hutton-soil. MR. LAZONBY seconded the proposition. THE REV. T. B. LOWRY, the guardian for Watermillock warned the Board against the principle involved in the proposition which cancelled one guardian in the Union, and the Local Government might, if they thought fit, go on disfranchising one township and parish after another. That would lead to centralisation to which there was much tendency at the present time; and after being done with Boards of Guardians, Government might go to counties and boroughs and carry on their work of disfranchisement there. After a conversation the proposition was unanimously agreed to. This concluded the extraordinary business, and the Board adjourned. =====================================================

    3. Ambleside Herald & Lakes News Issue 255 6 Feb 1885 Page 4 Death of JOHN VICKERS 255.4 Funeral of a Volunteer at Grasmere On Saturday last, a military funeral of the remains of JOHN VICKERS of Helm Crag, took place at Grasmere. Deceased, who had been ailing for some time, died on Wednesday the 28th ult in the 47th year of his age, and, having been a member of the I Company of the First Westmorland Rifle Volunteers for over 22 years, it was desired to show honour to his memory by having a military funeral. Accordingly a muster of the volunteers was called at the Drill Room for two o'clock, and, having assembled to the strength of 34 rank and file, they, under the command of CAPTAIN ROBINSON, marched to the residence at Helm Crag where the body lay, and where the band of the Ambleside Volunteers had already mustered. At three o'clock the corpse was placed in the hearse and the volunteers formed into marching order, a firing party, with reversed arms, under the command of Sergt. Usher, going first, followed by the band, the corpse, rank and file, the late captain of the I company (CAPTAIN GATEY) also being present. In this order the mournful procession wended towards the church, the solemn strains of the "Dead March" being emitted by the band the greater part of the way. Upon arrival at the church gates, the ranks opened and the corpse was taken into the church followed by the chief mourners and a numerous gathering. At the graveside, the REV. H.M. FLETCHER read the last offices of the church, and volleys - the soldier's last tribute to his comrade - were fired over the tomb. The death of Vickers leaves but two survivors of the company, the members of which were photographed on the occasion of the visit of Royalty to Grasmere in, we believe 1863. Until within the last two or three years, MR. SATTERTHWAITE carried on the trade of a blacksmith on the premises which had previously been occupied by his father; indeed the family for some generations have resided in the vicinity of Hawkshead. MR. SATTERTHWAITE was born in 1828, and was consequently 57 years of age at the time of his death which took place rather unexpectedly. He had not been well for some considerable time but in the twenty four hours preceding his death he very rapidly grew worse and sank to his rest on Monday morning. and on page 5 Deaths On 16th inst at Hawkshead, Mr. JOHN SATTERTHWAITE of the Red Lion Hotel, age 57 years David Leverton Leverton, Stevens, Clibborn, Dodgson, Hird, Stalker ulpha@telus.net ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Fri, 19 Dec 2008 06:34:13 -0800 From: David Leverton <ulpha@telus.net> Subject: [ENG-WESTMORLAND] Ambleside Herald & Lakes News 12 Dec 1884 Death of Henry Skelland To: eng-westmorland@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <n6cnk49qa1iuehi7ml2c1foghecl719tf0@4ax.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Ambleside Herald & Lakes News Issue #247 12 Dec 1884 Page 4 Death of HENRY SKELLAND Death of Oldest Oddfellow In England The death is announced of Mr HENRY SKELLAND, of Aughton, near Ormskirk. MR. SKELLAND was the oldest Oddfellow in England, having belonged to the Manchester Unity for 66 years. He joined the "pride of Glory" Lodge, Leigh District when he was 18 years of age, and in 1836, taking up his residence at Burscough, he opened the "Good Intent" Lodge, Ormskirk, with which he had ever since been connected, and of which up to a short time ago, he was one of the trustees. He founded Oddfellowship, and spread its principles throughout the Ormskirk District (with the exception of the "Earl of Derby" Lodge, Newburgh, then attached to the Wigan District) which comprises 1,500 members. He took part in the Preston Guild procession of 1822, and also walked in friendly society processions in 1842, 1862 and 1882. In the guild week of 1842 the demonstration of the friendly societies took place on the Monday. MR. SKELLAND walked from Burscough to Preston on that occasion, a distance of over 16 miles, beginning his journey at midnight on Sunday, and on his arrival at Preston walked through the town with the Oddfellows in the friendly society processions. At the Guild of 1882 he rode in a carriage which had been provided for old members, and was congratulated on his hale and hearty appearance. He wore on that occasion a silver medal which had been presented to him some years ago by the Oddfellows fraternity. THOMSON, Esq., and jury, whereof Mr. J. METCALF was foreman, on the body of WILLIAM STEWARDSON, a gardener who had been found dead in bed at his lodgings that morning. SARAH NELSON of Grasmere, a widow said: Deceased, WILLIAM STEWARDSON, was my nephew. He was 47 years of age, and a gardener by trade; but has been ill for the last four or five years and for some time has not been able to follow his employment. Until recently he and his father lived together. The father, who died on the first of February, was of very penurious habits and would not procure the necessaries of life, although he had money. Since his death the deceased had an allowance of 3s 6d from the club. The property remaining is to be divided amongst three - myself and two others. When I was sent for and came down here, he was not in bed but I found him in his room along with Mrs. Barker, where he was lodging. He seemed nicely and did not make any particular complaint; but he had said that he would not be long here. He has been very much troubled with sleepless nights since his father died, and has been taking liquor as well as medicine supplied by the doctor. I gave him some medicine according to the doctor's orders from the bottle now produced. Deceased said he was used to taking five spoonfuls of the medicined for a dose. On leaving for the night, I told the young boy not to let anyone in; and when I came this morning the shutters were down and Hadwin had not come down, but afterwards we went together into deceased's room and found him dead. He said last night that he would not live long but did not complain of neglect in any way, or the want of anything. Coroner: I think when deceased and his father lived they often wanted for the necessaries of life on account of their carefulness. It was about twenty minutes past eight when we found deceased. HENRY BARKER, of Bowness, 15 years of age said he resided with his mother. Deceased had lived with them for about a fortnight, and had been ailing during the whole time. He appeared to be seized for the worse only yesterday or the day before, and though he did not complain of anything particularly, he sent for DR. DOBSON, and the assistant came. I gave him some medicine, but he was not satisfied with the quantity and measured about five spoonfuls for himself. THOMAS DOBSON, MD deposed - I have attended the deceased more or less for the past 20 years; during the past five or six years have been frequently and during that time he has not been able to work. He was suffering from sleeplessness and general debility, which more recently turned to bronchitis. I prescribed the medicine to him, which consists of tincture opium and bromide of potassium. Two spoonfuls is a proper dose, and he had instructions as to quantity; but he has been used to taking the same kind of mixture for so many years that double the quantity that would prove fatal ordinarily would not affect him. I have, however, ordered deceased recently that he was not to take more than the proper quantity; and I also gave a similar caution to MRS. BARKER, his landlady. . The Coroner having noticed there were no directions on the bottle, witness replied that he had not considered it material as deceased well knew how much to take; and as he had been used to it for some years even a double dose, or more, would not cause any serious or fatal effects on deceased; in fact, he could take it (the mixture) the same as water. Although the dose given by MRS. NELSON was a large one, it was not the cause of death in this case, and he did not think it was sufficient to do so. The actual cause of death was owing to continuous bad living over a lengthened period, but not particularly towards the last - not having sufficient food. Deceased had also been in the habit of taking a great deal of alcoholic stimulants since his father's death, and not sufficient nutritious food. What he had would be principally tea etc. Coroner: What is your opinion as to the actual cause of death? Witness: I would say the cause of death was a failure of the proper action of the heart, and a dose of that stuff would accelerate it. Coroner: Do you think a post mortem examination would assist you in arriving at a more definite conclusion? Witness: I don't think so; but if you consider it necessary I can make a post mortem examination at once. The Jury, in reply to the Coroner, said they did not think such an examination at all necessary after the remarks of DR. DOBSON and in this view the Coroner said he concurred. He did not think there was any difficulty in the way of finding a verdict; still he considered it a rather peculiar case and such a one as it was proper to inquire into. A verdict was then entered according to the evidence. 3. Ambleside Herald & Lakes News Issue 99 18 Feb 1882 Page 4 Death of WATSON TYSON Auld WATTY TYSON. We have to announce the somewhat sudden death of the venerable piscator, WATSON TYSON of Hawkshead. Deceased spent many a happy and pleasant day on Esthwaite Lake in the company of gentlemen from a distance who were fascinated with the honest simplicity and rural feeling of our hero. On Monday, the 30th ult the old man was not seen moving about as he used to do; yet no notice was taken of it. Towards evening DR. HODGKINSON called, and finding the middle door closed, shouted out "Watson" and received a feeble reply that he was within. The Dr. thought the old man was groggy, and in bed; consequently he left. Later on in the evening SAMUEL POSTLETHWAITE called to see the old man, and shouted out "Watson" and receiving a somewhat vague reply, went across the street to ISAAC POSTLETHWAITE's and enquired if he had seen "Old Watty" that day. Postlethwaite replied in the negative. They consulted a little and then went to the old man's house (if it can be called that ) and found the middle door shut. On entering they found him lying behind the door with only his drawers on, nearly starved to death and quite speechless. It is supposed that the deceased had got up from his bed in the morning, and gone into the other room to call for assistance and had fallen down as one of his arms was cold and powerless. They had him immediately conveyed to his bed, and applied warm bottles to his feet and legs, and administered draughts of brandy, but all of no avail. He never rallied, but lingered on till Wednesday when he expired. Deceased, who was 82 years of age, had resided in the old hut upwards of 80 years. The old place was over run with rats, and the deceased was obliged to keep a stick lying on the bed in order to keep off the vermin. He had on many occasions seen three or four rats at once run across the bed. Deceased shortly after his death was taken to MRS. RAWLINSON's house and kept there till Sunday afternoon when his remains were interred in Hawkshead churchyard. He was followed to his last resting place by all the people of Hawkshead and its neighbourhood, including many gentlemen. Deceased was a son of old ROBBIN TYSON who in the days of yore was a huntsman to the late for Wm. ???, Esq of Green End, Colthouse, near Hawkshead.
