    3. John: Here is the link to the Morland Parish Registers 1538 - 1742. I did NOT do the original transcription of these registers; what I did is purchase the already printed transcription, which was done by an unknown transcriber, and published in (I think) 1957 in a book form. So, a transciption of a transcription, if you will. http://www.cumberlandarchives.co.uk/ Just click on the Morland Parish Registers on the left side of the page. Barb, Ontario, Canada.

    3. Hi, I am looking for information on John Graham, born abt 1824 in Kirklinton. He married Sarah McDonald/MackDonald/MacDonald, born abt 1829 in Blencairn & Kirkland. Their children were: William born 1855, Joseph McDonald born 1857, Jane Rudd born 1861 and John born 1865. (Both Joseph and John emigrated to Australia). John & Sarah resided in Temple Sowerby for much of their lives. I am searching for information on John's parents. His fathers' name was William Graham. Mothers' name is unknown. Also, any information regarding Sarah's parents: Joseph McDonald (or equivalent) (possibly born abt 1793 at Temple Sowerby) and Jane Rudd (born abt 1800) and other possible family members would be very greatly appreciated. I have information on Joseph McDonald's descendants that I can, in turn, share. Thankyou and warm regards, Lisa Murray.

At Millom, Cumberland beat Westmorland by five tries to nothing, and Cheshire were defeated by Durham at Sunderland by two goals and four tries to two tries. At Bristol, the game between Gloucestershire and Somersetshire ended in favour of the latter county by a goal and two tries to two tries. ==========================================

    2. Barb Baker
    3. AGRICULTURAL REVIEW OF THE WEEK But, while MR. WATT quoted extensively from MR. WILSON FOX's report to the effect above described, he forgot to quote, also, the statement of the complaint of many of the farmers, that rents have not been sufficiently reduced to meet the times. MR. WATT apparently carries his admiration of the large-estate to the extreme of rejoicing over the absorption of the little estate of the "statesmen" of Cumberland into the big ones. He quotes, with approval, MR. FOX's statement to the effect that the Underley Estate, which is, in great part, made up of farms once owned by their cultivators, yields more than "double of what the land was capable of when divided and ill-managed." Such a story requires confirmation, although there appears to be no doubt as to a great deal of money having been spent on the estate by the late owner. The "statesmen" have been steadily dying out for generations, partly because they encumbered their little estates too heavily, and partly because they could get enough money by selling their land to enable them to hire much larger farms. On economic grounds, the change was probably prudent; but still the extinction of our old yeomanry is to be regretted. As to large estates, it is no doubt, better to be under a great landlord than under a small one, as a rule, and especially in bad times, and in the existing state of the land-tenancy laws; but uncomfortable doubts will arise as to whether the system is one to foster independence or enterprise. There is too close an approach to a benevolent despotism on many of the great estates to please a lover of freedom and independence. ==========================================

    1. [ENG-WESTMORLAND] THE LEEDS MERCURY Friday January 3, 1896 / AGRICULTURAL REVIEW #1
    2. Barb Baker
    3. AGRICULTURAL REVIEW OF THE WEEK. A triumphant eulogism of the landlords of Cumberland made up the greater part of a paper read by MR. JAMES WATT, at the recent meeting of the Cumberland and Westmorland Chamber of Agriculture. It is true that the tenants were praised first, as capable, industrious, and thrifty farmers, who have met the bad times better than their fellows in many parts of the county; but far more time was diverted to the glorification of the landlords. They are not of the rack-renting class, or among those who put the rent up upon an improving tenant. They, or their agents, do not exact the highest rent they could obtain, or always accept the tenant who makes the highest offer for a farm. They select the best man, and charge such a rent as he can pay. The tenants want no fixity of tenure, we are told, for the same families live on the estates for generations; and they have all the freedom of cultivation and sale of produce that they require. In short, MR. WATT painted a picture of the agricultural community of Cumberland as that of a happy family, needing no such coarse and disturbing elements as laws between landlords and tenants. No doubt the picture is a true one in the main. The farmers of the county are a shrewd, as well as a hard-working set of men, and they have had the good sense to devote their energies chiefly to the branches of farming to which their soil and climate are best suited - stock rearing and dairying. Most of the large landowners are wealthy, and considerate of their power. Whether, like prudent railway companies, they "charge as much as the traffic will bear," and no more, or whether they charge a little less, it is difficult to say. But it is not bad business in such times as these to keep good tenants by charging only moderate rents. It is more pleasant to look at the matter in this light, than to regard the tenants as a set of children treated indulgently by benevolent landlords under a paternal system. It is sound policy to avoid the laws by which many rack-renting landlords have forced their tenants into bankruptcy, and greatly deteriorated the value of their own estates in consequence. ...Part Two will follow...

    3. AGRICULTURAL REVIEW OF THE WEEK. Canada means to obtain a larger share than she has at present of the British food supply. She sends us half the cheese which we import, and has made a beginning in sending increased quantities of butter under official supervision. Now a great effort is to be made to capture a greater share of the meat trade. The Canadian Government propose to purchase about 500 cattle a week, to slaughter them at Montreal, and to ship the meat in chilled (not frozen) condition to the principal cities and towns of Great Britain, where they are to be disposed of to consumers through shops which will be opened for Canadian produce only. It is believed that this trade will be more advantageous to Canadian meat-producers than the existing traffic to live cattle. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The American National Wool Growers' Association held a great meeting the other day to demand the reimposition of the duty on wool. Their industry, they declared, was being ruined by free imports. The poor men have been so long coddled by Protection that they cannot compete with men who have been obliged to exercise the utmost enterprise in improving their flocks for wool-production. Otherwise, it is not easy to see why wool cannot be grown in the vast tracts of free land in Texas, Montana, Arizona, and Washington Territory as cheaply as in Australia or the Argentine Republic. Yet one speaker from Texas declared that there were millions of acres in that State almost valueless, except as sheep pasturage, and that Texas could carry 30,000,000 sheep, instead of about 2,000,000 if wool were at a paying price. ==========================================

Cumberland) thought that whoever had selected this committee had not shown much ability in the selection. The county he represented was the only place where the Scotch banks had established agencies for carrying on their banking business, and it was the county which originated the opposition to these banks of issue, yet not one of the eleven members returned from Cumberland was nominated upon the committee. He moved that one Member from the county of Cumberland, Westmorland, or Northumberland should be added to the committee. MR. MCLAREN (Edinburgh) suggested that two additional Members representing Scotch constituencies should be added, not representing the Scotch banks, but the general interest of the people of Scotland. After a long discussion as to the ' personnel ' of the committee, the list as proposed by the Chancellor of the Exchequer was agreed to. The House adjourned at 1.50. ======================================

    3. LOCAL & DISTRICT NEWS. MILITARY TRAINING GROUND FOR THE NORTH. A correspondent says - "Since 1874, the War Minister and his subordinates have been unceasing in their efforts to secure for the purposes of a military tactical station some 1,500 or 2,000 acres of the numerous large tracts of moorland in Yorkshire and on the eastern borders of Westmorland at something like a reasonable price, but without avail. Of the three and a half millions voted by parliament for carrying out the provisions of the Localisation Act £300,000. was allowed by the Committee for the purchase of lands to form this tactical station; but in estimating the probably value of moorland, the Committee appear to have entirely overlooked one very important item, which is the annual rent derived from sportsmen. Many of these barren moors, to all appearance valueless, will realize during the seaon from £10 to £14 per acre for their fluctuating supply of grouse to the gun, and as the demand for sport each year far exceeds the supply, the prospective value of the moors becomes proportionately high. Unless, therefore, Government is prepared to give a fancy price, it is to be feared that the North will still remain without its Aldershot, and must fain be content with a limited training ground for its militia and volunteers.
