    1. [ENG-WESTMORLAND] TRANSCRIPTION OF EDENHALL DOCUMENT
    2. Barb Baker
    3. As requested by Petra.Mitchinson@doctors.org.uk I am forwarding this to the Westmorland List, in hopes that someone could add to her document transcribing. Barb Baker ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I recently noticed that a seller on eBay has many documents on sale from the archives of the MUSGRAVE family of Edenhall. This family's estates were both in Cumberland and in Westmorland. Most of these documents are bills and receipts, which contain at the very least then name of the person being paid and the name of the agent working for the MUSGRAVEs who paid them. Sometimes there are whole lists of labourers being paid. A few documents are Court Baron lists of fines or lists of tenants. It makes me sad that such an archives is being irretrievably dispersed, and so much information that is potentially of value to family and social historians will no longer be accessible. I therefore decided to transcribe the documents from the excellent photos the seller put up on eBay. Unfortunately I started far too late. The documents have been on sale since at least March 2009, and I only started transcribing in mid-July. Any sold documents, even if the eBay page is still available, have had their photos removed. I have managed to transcribe about 180 documents, including all the ones currently for sale, but I must have missed hundreds! I have contacted the sellers, but unfortunately they have not kept photos of the sold documents. My plan is to transcribe as many documents as possible, put them into a Word document in chronological order, and make an index of all names. I would give a copy to the Record Office (if they are interested), and Chris is happy to put the transcription on his Rumbutter site. My plea is this: Has anyone saved any images of any of these documents, or even bought some and could scan them, and would send me the images so I can transcribe them? Any help would be appreciated! And could someone who is on the Westmorland mailing list forward this appeal to that list? Sorry about cross-posting this to several lists. Many thanks, Petra Petra.Mitchinson@doctors.org.uk

    3. Hi Cathie, Someone has kindly done a look-up for me. My interest was in Dorothy Medcalf, who I thought might have been the widow of my 3x great grandfather Thomas Medcalf but looks like not being the cae as Dorothy is listed as a spinster in the marriage entry. I nothing nothing more about Thomas & Dorothy Benson's children other than what is given on the IGI. Hello Derek: I don't know for sure, but could it have possibly been that the first register of the birth could not be found; perhaps the page had not been included for some reason; if someone was going to get married or some other earth-shaking event, they would need to produce proof of birth. This happened to me recently while investigating my father's background in Canada. A note on the Birth registration stated that "mother has updated the information", and it was around the time that the ancestor married. Just a guess on my part ! 1. [ENG-WESTMORLAND] ? Double Registration of Births ?
    2. West ML
    3. In my family history research into ancestors of the marriage of George W Buck and Annie E Wightman, both of Kendal, I have come across an apparent anomoly in the GRO Birth Indexes - see below - Births Jun 1914 BUCK George A B Wightman Kendal 10b 1501 BUCK John W B Wightman Kendal 10b 1501 Births Mar 1933 BUCK George A Wightman Kendal 10b 1018 BUCK John W Wightman Kendal 10b 1018 It looks to me as if the original twin births from 1914 have, for some unknown reason, been re-registered again in 1933. Does anybody have any idea as to why these births would have been re-registered some 19 years later ? Derek.

    3. William 48 and Alice 46 appear to be in the 1851 in Moss Side Ulverston. Children Amelia 16, Thomas 11, James 9, Anne 7 and Jane 4. William was born Leathwaite Lancs and Alice Holehead Aldingham Lancs. Aldingham is close to Dalton in Furness. In the 1841 there are also Eleanor 12, Mary 11, Ruth 9, Alice 7, Agnes 5, John 3 and the Thomas who is also in the 1851. It is quite likely all of these except Thomas had left home by 1851 though Amelia is a mystery. In 1841 Williams occupation was Iron Miner, but in 1851 he was a Waller. Can't find the birth of Alice or their marriage though. But from the age of Eleanor, 1829 or earlier seems likely, there of course could be other siblings who had left home by 1841. IGI records for this time frame and area seem a bit sparse it may require a visit to the records office. 2. David Hughlock
    3. Hello Listers, We hope this is covered by one of the three sites chosen - CUMBRIA RESEARCH IS CALLED FOR HERE WE THINK ? We purchased some hours of research from Cumbria Record Office some time ago. We provided precise details of who and what we were looking for. Needless to say we did not get answers to the many questions we had posed. The research officer just gave us some IGI listings which we already had. We are reluctant to fund further research from that source. So we have come to the knowledgeable experts in the hope that someone will be able to guide us. It has been suggested that we look into bastardy bonds to see if the father of the following can be found. You will notice that one son is named ATKINSON and this may possibly be an indication as to the father. These names and details were abstracted from a family bible we have been assured. They may,or may not, be correct ! 1 - Mary Ullock born 16 Nov 1787 Cartmel Grange Parish baptised 18 Dec 1787 at Cartmel Grange Parish illegitimate daughter of Sarah Ullock of Grange. 2 - James Ullock born 26 Feb 1793 baptised 24 March 1793 illegitimate son of Sarah Ullock of Grange a Pauper. 3 - Atkinson Ullock born 19 March 1797 baptised 23 April 1797 illegitimate son of Sarah Ullock of Grange a Pauper. 4 - Matthew Ullock born 21 Oct 1801 baptised 16 Nov 1801 illegitimate son of Sarah Ullock of Grange a Pauper. 5 - Robert Ullock/Hullock/Hewlock/Hulock born baptised 1 Sept 1805 illegitimate son of Sarah Ullock of Flookburgh Chapelry. Could a kind person point us in the correct direction for records of this type please. This is a precise copy of the researchers findings:- Quote "I have found the following entries in the Cartmel registers: Cartmel Parish Registers Baptisms 24 March 1793, James illegitimate daughter of Sarah Ullock, grange, pauper. Born 26 Feb 23 April 1797, Atkinson illegitimate son of Sarah Ullock, Grange. Born 19 March 16 Nov 1801, Matt son of Sarah Ullock, Grange. Born 21 Oct 1 Sept 1805, Robert illegitimate son of Sarah Ullock Flookburgh Chapelry. No date of birth Burials 24 Oct 1802 died 22 Oct 1802, Matthew son of Sarah Ullock, Cark I could find no mention of Mary Ullock born in 1787. Baptism of Sarah Ullock c 1765. I checked the following parish registers but found no mention of a Sarah Ullock: Broughton-in-Furness, Cartmel, Colton, Torver, Kirkby Ireleth, Urswick, Ulverston, Pennington, Woodland, Thwaites, Ulpha, Dalton-in-Furness, Millom, Seathwaite, Hawkshead and Aldingham. We do not have the Whitehaven registers here but according to the IGI there was a baptism of a Sarah Ullock daughter of Serjeant Ullock (or Sargent) baptised at Holy Trinity, Whitehaven. There is also a marriage entry for a Sarjent/Sergent Ullock on 25 Oct 1755. James Ullock born 1801 We do not have any Roman Catholic Records for Ulverston before 1812 and the ones we have are a transcript. James was not baptised at St Mary’s Ulverston. Catholic records for Ulverston are held by Lancashire Record Office". End of Quote Many thanks Bronwen and David
