Is this possibly the Mary Steel that married in Warcop in 1776 as there is a possibility this could be the daughter of William Steel and Mary Pearson, who was born 1753. I must admit that being on holiday I had not been reading my mail too closely so missed the prior messages to this one. Another nice person, Eddie, from list gave me a couple of those too but maybe you have more in your tree to share. I had her in 1871 and 1881 both before and after marriage to Thomas Shuttleworth. The census form says he is unmarried but he is only 20 and she is 9 so I think possibly Eddie has it right that she may be the illegitimate daughter of one of two daughters an Ann Whinn. Do you have anything more about the Whinn family or the Shuttleworths? I am not sure if I have anything to share with you but If I do I will. Thanks again. I am researching my line of KNIPE. I have all info from a Thomas Knipe[born 1777-83] who married in Plumbland in 1815 onwards! He died in Maryport in 1842 age 59. Please can you all make a note of any Knipe that pops up [in leases, rentals etc etc] in your research, say < 1780 as I will have to go through all the early KNIPE documentation and will probably have missed something. I have had to rule out the Thomas Knipe born Uldale 1883 as I have confirmed that he died when he was 21. To the best of my knowledge, there were very few Knipe's Cumberland so there is a good chance that "our Knipes" actually were originally from Westmorland. The Knipe/Knype name goe back to 1300 in Westmorland. Thank you all! Bev Kirby
Bev, I am trying to trace a Charlotte Knipe who appears in the church records for Calcutta as marrying William Graham in 1816. I have no information on her before 1816. I guess that she was born sometime between 1780 and 1800 but I don't know where. I had thought of St Helena as a possible location as it was on the trade route to India and there were Knipe families there at that time. Your mention that the name goes back to 1300 in Westmorland has prompted me to ask about her on this List. Does anyone know of any Knipes going to India at that time? Hello I am new to the list. I am researching my family name and some direct descendants are from JOHN ENGLISH HOWDEN SNAITH (1852-1940) and JOSEPH MAIN SNAITH (1823-1901) who moved to Kendal from Barnard Castle. In a recent visit to Carlisle Record office I found the will of LAZARUS(1870-1940) a Cycle Dealer in Bowness and the Admin for HARRY(1858-1938) a Carpet Weaver in Kendal. I know that both the above had families most probably still in the area. I would be grateful to hear from anyone interested in the SNAITH families in these areas. Many thanks Brian Snaith Yoxall, Staffs.
