    1. [ENG-WESTMORLAND] Wells family of Shap and Morland
    2. John Wells
    3. Hello!   I am new to the list, but excited about the possibilities. I am looking for help researching the Wells family of Shap and Morland, Westmorland. It appeared that my ancestor Richard Wells was christened in Morland in 1618, the son of Robert Wells and grandson of Richard Wells of Shap. The family disappeared from Morland parish records in 1625. I need to connect with anyone who is interested in this family. John B. Wells III Newnan, Georgia

Poor Tom came here to lie from Battles of Dettengen & Fontenoy in 1743 and 1745. Margaret his Wife died January 5th 1811 Aged 82 years. I think this may be window at St Martins Church in Bowness. 3. Hello Pauline, I don't have a marriage cert. for William. I believe he married Alice Burn at Kendal on 25 Nov 1843 and I hope to look this up next time I can get up to Kendal, although I have found that a marriage entry of whether a father is deceased or not cannot always be relied upon. I have not been able to find a Thomas Dent, Linsey Weaver, on any census and therefore suspect that he may have died before 1841. I believe that the John Dent, step-son, living with Thomas and Elizabeth Dodgson at Sedbergh in 1851 is Elizabeth's son (illegitimate ?). The IGI gives a John Dent, mother Elizabeth Dent, bapt. 11 Nov 1835 at Kendal and FreeBMD gives a possible marriage of an Elizabeth Dent and Thomas Dodgson in June qtr 1842, Sedburgh RD. This is most likely the same John Dent age 5 who is with Sarah Dent and William Dent (son ?) on the 1841 census. The IGI gives bapts. of Wm Dent 7 June 1818 and Elizabeth 3 July 1815 both with parents Thos Dent & Sarah, which would fit with the above. My main line is from Sarah Dent (daughter) who married Thomas Medcalf at Kendal in 1832 - unfortunately too early for a father's name to be recorded in the marriage entry (deceased or not !). Regards, Derek. ----- Original Message ----- From: Pauline To: eng-westmorland@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, September 03, 2009 9:20 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-WESTMORLAND] THOMAS DENT, Linsey Weaver Hello Derek Just stating the obvious I know but do you have a marriage cert. for William (20 in the 1841 census) does he say his father is deceased ? It could narrow it down a bit. Also have you spotted on the 1851 census a John Dent born Kendal of the right sort of age a step son of a Thomas and Elizabeth Dodgson family living Sedbergh or have you found him in the 1851 ? 3. Hi Pauline, Thank you for your two replies. The 1841 Census that you quote is the correct one. Also, I am aware of the 1802 marriage on the website. I found the September 1838 death on FreeBMD a few years ago and sent for the death certificate but this turned out to be a Thomas Dent, Stone Cutter, from Hutton Roof - so not the right one ! But I note that the LDS site shows their marriage in 1802 (bride Sarah Anderson) am I correct ? If she is shown as a widow on the 1841 there is a death in Kendal for September 1838 shown on Free BMD - could this perhaps be him ? Regards, Pauline

    3. Hi John Thank you for replying to my enquiry. I think Thomas Snr may have been a member of the Primitive Methodist church. His death in Australia has this as his religion. I believe this church is classed as non comformist. His second wife ,Sarah's, maiden name was Gordon. After years of searching I finally found that she had been married before and that her name had been Carey /Kerey. Her fourth child born in Victoria had the mothers name as Carey. I wonder if Thomas 1st wife was a Thompson, given one of the sons was named that. I wiil hunt through the shipping records in Aust. in case he was indexed as Thompson not Braithwaite. Will apply for the certificate of the 2nd marriage and also for a birth certificate for one of the children of the 1st marriage. Again thank you for your help Lyn, Wodonga, Australia On 02/09/2009, at 5:00 PM, eng-westmorland-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. 2. John Steel Genealogy
    3. Lyn The 1851 Census has Thomas Brathwaite, Joiner ,48 born Kendal with John 20 and Thomas 18 as well as Thompson 16, all children were born Toxteth Park Liverpool and that is where they were living in 1851. This would make Thomas born circa 1802, They are in the 1841 census as well, together with Mary their mother. Again in Toxteth Park and Thomas senior was an Ironer. It is possible Thomas married Sarah Kerey in West Derby (Liverpool) in the Jun quarter 1852. The IGI has an unverified entry of Thomas marrying Mary Stainton in Kendal 25th May 1834 if this is the marriage then it is after the births of all the children. I can't see any birth entry that looks definite, there was a Thomas born 1802 in Preston Patrick, near Kendal but I can't see anything in Kendal.
