Rob sent this message to the Cumberland list: >>> Well, it's certainly got me hooked! I think I have found two more of his men - James Furness, Stobars Lodge, Kirkby Stephen, 42, Gardner. Thomas Warwick, & his son Gibson, Main Street, 52, Joiner. I found another note somewhere on Rootsweb from a fellow researcher, that Gibson Warwick had worked on the Stobars Estate all of his life - so I wonder if the author of your diary also lived there? In the 1891 census, the residents of Stobars Hall were: Richard B Thompson, single, head, 29, living on own means. Annie Thompson, mother, widow, 56. Gerard E Thompson, brother, 27, living on own means, and four domestic servants. The fact that Furness lives next door in the Lodge might also be a good pointer. There is also a Thompson family down the road in Greenriggs: Joseph Thompson, 52, Yeoman Farmer Ann Thompson, 59, wife and a large adult family: Isabella, 34 John, 32, farmers son Joseph, 30, farmers son Agnes, 29 Ann, 27 Margaret, 21, student of teaching Arthur, 20, student of Literae Humanities. Perhaps the authour is from this family? And the Aunt, he refers to (his benefactor) is Annie Thompson? <<< I responded: >>> Rob, you've got it! I only found him by chance because I came across James FURNESS living at Stobars Lodge. It is Richard Bovil THOMPSON, who I think is the writer of the diary. The aunts he refers to are very likely Maria and Agnes Elyetson THOMPSON, sisters of his father (they erected a memorial at Crosby Garrett Church to Richard's father Matthew), and Richard inherited the "Lordship or Manor of Crosby Garrett" for life from aunt Agnes when she died in 1909. The aunts lived in Main Street in Kirkby Stephen in 1881, although Maria appears to have died in 1885 so could not have been mentioned in the diary. Google "Richard Bovil Thompson" to see a document regarding the ownership of Crosby Garrett Common - last page of the document. I shall post my write-up on the family in a minute. Congratulations, Rob!!! You are the CUMBRIAN MASTER SLEUTH OF THE MONTH! >>>

I echo the other comments. I rarely post since my primary interest is the Wells family of Westmorland. However, I read every post and I am quickly falling in love with the beautiful place called Cumbria and its wonderful and hardy people. I am very proud to be a descendant of those tough, independent people of the Northwest. John B. I have a few more details like individual census returns, but this is the gist of it: My research suggests that the writer of the diary was Richard Bovil THOMPSON of Stobars Hall, Kirkby Stephen. In 1889 he was a 27-year-old single man, living at Stobars with his mother Annie and younger brother Gerard Elyetson THOMPSON. Richard was the son of Matthew THOMPSON, a landowner (450 acres in 1851), Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Westmorland. Matthew was born on 15 Jun 1815 in Kirkby Stephen, son of Richard THOMPSON and Mary née ELYETSON, who were married on 26 Oct 1812 at Ravenstonedale. Matthew THOMPSON married twice: Firstly, on 27 May 1845 at Ravenstonedale he married Mary DAWSON. With her he had three children: Mary bap. 27 Aug 1847 at Kirkby Stephen (she must be the "M." repeatedly mentioned in the diary), Sybil bap. 20 Oct 1848 and Richard bap. 30 Oct 1855, both of whom died at the age of a few days. The 1851 census showed Matthew THOMPSON, married and aged 35, in Kirkby Stephen (no address given) with daughter Mary aged 3 and three servants, but no sign of wife Mary. Matthew's wife Mary died on 19 Apr 1857. He married his second wife Anne HEWETSON (later always known as Annie), who had been bap. 02 Jan 1834 in Ravenstonedale. Their marriage produced three children: Richard Bovil (the writer of the diary) born December Quarter 1861, Gerard Elyetson ("G." in the diary) born March Quarter 1864, and Edith Annie ("E." or "Edie" in the diary) born March Quarter 1866. Matthew THOMPSON died on 09 May 1871 aged 55, but his widow Annie survived until March Quarter 1919, when she died aged 85. Richard and Gerard were at Stobars in every census between 1871 and 1901. It appears Richard never married. Gerard was still unmarried in 1901; there is a possible marriage to a Letitia E. IRVING in June Quarter 1918. However, in his will he left all his property to a HEWETSON cousin, so does not appear to have had any surviving dependants. I could not find Edith Annie in 1891, but she was still unmarried and living with her mother and brothers at Stobars in 1901. In 1889 Mary and Edith appeared to be living at Waterfoot in Dacre parish in Cumberland. I eventually found Mary on the 1891 census when she was staying with (her aunt) Agnes E. THOMPSON in a boarding house in Holdenhurst, Hampshire, and in 1901 aunt and niece were living together in Market Street, Kirkby Stephen, both single and living on their own means. In 1881 and 1891, a James FURNESS, a gardener, was living at the Lodge or Gardener's House at Stobars, and a labourer by the name of FURNESS is frequently mentioned in the diary. This man got me onto the right trail in the first place! The GANDYs lived at Skirsgill Park in Dacre parish. Henry and John (mentioned as Harry and Johnny GANDY in the diary) were aged 28 and 26 in 1889. The family was "living on their own means", and John and another brother were working as solicitors. Their father Henry Gandy, a retired Captain of the 83rd Regiment and Magistrate and Deputy Lieutenant of Westmorland, had died in June Quarter 1888 (his horse was being sold in Penrith the following February, according to the diary). The family had six servants including a butler and a coachman in the 1891 census. The CHAMLEYs lived in Warcop on their own means. "C. CHAMLEY" was their son Charles Braithwaite, aged 18 in 1889. The WYBERGHs also lived in Warcop; their son Hilton was born in 1866 - he died in August 1889. Francis WYBERGH, father of this family, was a farmer, but by 1881 had retired and in 1891 was also said to be living on his own means. F. CHATFIELD, mentioned in July 1889, lived on his own means in Long Marton in 1891 with a wife, 3 children and 3 servants. So the THOMPSONs had plenty of equally privileged associates. I hope everybody enjoyed this little exercise! The Diary Quiz seems to have gone down like a lead balloon on the Googlies and Westmorland lists - not a whisper! Come on, folks, what happened to your sleuthing skills? As usual, the Cumberland list is rising to the challenge but has not yet found the solution. Here are the offerings so far: Dot made a wild guess (her own words!) at Henry Tufton, 1st Baron Hothfield 1844-1926, of Appleby Castle. His ancestors were noted sportsmen, cricket and field sports included. He held the manor of Kirkby Stephen. David Armstrong added that Sir Henry Tufton was the second Baronet of Appleby and was raised to the Peerage in 1881 as Baron Hothfield. An argument against him would be that his cricket team played against Appleby, although Dot suggested that maybe the cricket match was a friendly between Gentlemen and Town? Rob then got stuck in to some serious research and identified two of his staff in Kirkby Stephen in the 1891 census: John Birtall, 61 - Coachman and Gardener. Henry Burrows, 59 - Ag Labourer. And some of his friends: The Breeks lived at Helbeck Hall, Helbeck. Charles Breeks was obviously a friend - he was studying at Oxford in 1891. The Chamley's lived at Warcop House, Warcop. Rob initially felt that the diarist was too "workmanlike" to be so high born. He did get his hands dirty in the field a fair bit. Rob thought that it might be an account of somebody hired by wealthy landowners to fulfil a role, probably associated with hunting. He attended monthly board meetings - which seems the only official business he made account of. He did, however, have a trip to Monte Carlo, in March, though this could have possibly been as a proffessionaly hunting companion? However Rob then thought after re-reading the diary that maybe the diarist was not just an employee - he seemed to engage in a lot of fine dining, and held Tennis days at his place. That's how far we have got. I think Rob's way of identifying staff and friends of the diarist is a good way forward. Any more offerings? Petra

My name is Petra, and I have just joined this list because what follows is relevant to this list. My usual haunt is the Cumberland list. In July 2009, I spotted an item on eBay labelled as "1889 Cumbria Hunting, Shooting & Fishing Diary". Although the seller stated that the name of the author of the diary was not known, I thought that it may be possible to work this out from the information given in the diary with the help of other sources, such as local newspapers or census returns. I successfully bid for the diary, and have now transcribed it. The daily entries are only short and often rather cryptic. The seller thought the diary was from the Carlisle area, on the basis that a child had scribbled a Carlisle address near the front of the diary. During transcribing, it quickly became apparent that most of the locations mentioned were in Westmorland, and particularly in the Kirkby Stephen area. Unfortunately the author does not mention his own name, and although he names friends and men who work for him, he rarely gives a first name and surname together, and at times uses only initials! So trying to establish the identity of the writer of the diary is quite a challenge. (I think I've cracked it, but I'm not giving it away just yet!) What did become clear quite quickly was that this was a man of considerable means. He was engaged in farming pursuits but appeared to spend most of his time hunting. He mixed with other very well off people, mostly young men. He went to Leeds for a pantomime and several times to London where he dined in a club, attended shows, clothes shopped and went to the Derby. He also spent a 10-day holiday in March in Menton on the French Riviera and during that time regularly gambled in Monte Carlo. At home, apart from hunting, he enjoyed pidgeon shooting, tennis, playing cricket for his local team, dining with friends, and the occasional round of roulette. He also attended local Board Meetings and clearly was conservative in politics as he attended a meeting of the Primrose League. The diary itself is a printed hardback book measuring 22 cm x 14.5 cm. It had three pages of advertisements both in the front and in the back, but one sheet of advertisements in the back has been torn out. There are several unnumbered pages of general information in the front. The numbered pages start with three blank pages for memoranda, which the diary writer left blank, but on which some children later scribbled. Several of the diary pages have children's pencil scribble all over them, and unfortunately one sheet in November and five sheets at the end of the diary have been torn out. The writer's handwriting is fast and sloppy and can be quite difficult to read. As far as possible, I have tried to check partially legible entries against maps etc. to ascertain the correct spelling. However, there will inevitably be some transcription mistakes. The diary pages are laid out as two pages to a week with Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday on the left hand page, and Thursday, Friday and Saturday on the right hand page; Sunday stretches across the bottom of both pages. Each day has the day, date, a countdown of which day in the year it is and how many more days to go in square brackets, and as appropriate phases of the moon and Bank Holidays etc. In transcribing, I have used italics for handwritten entries, and any transcriber's queries I have put into square brackets. Surnames have not been capitalised because I could not always be sure whether a name was a surname, a first name, an animal's name or a place name! Unfortunately, as the Rootsweb lists use plain text, a lot of the formatting is lost in these postings. The phases of the moon come out as ~ for a new moon, a comma for a waxing half moon, for a full moon and f for a waning half moon. If someone is desperate to see the formatted version, I can send them the Word document on request. NOW FOR THE CHALLENGE ! ! ! Can anybody work out who the writer of the diary was? Suggestions to the list please. There isn't a prize except for the title of "CUMBRIAN MASTER SLEUTH OF THE MONTH"! As this will be cross posted to the CUL Googlies list and the Rootsweb Cumberland list, I shall endeavour to post updates to all lists how the quest is progressing. I'll post the diary in monthly sections to avoid overly long postings. Happy sleuthing! Petra
hello list, this is my first post so please excuse me if the format/content is off the mark. I am trying to establish the baptism details and parents of a Jane Hetherington born circa 1796 in Westmorland. In 1818 she married Joseph Furness in Ormside and they had (if the IGI is correct) nine children (1818 Elizabeth, 1820 Mary, 1821 Robt, 1823 John, 1824 Jane, 1826 Joseph, 1829 Thomas, 1833 Hannah and 1836 Ann all in Long Marton. Jane appears in the 1841 census with Joseph Furness but neither appear in 1851. Any information/ helpful suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you Allison
