My ancestor, Thomas Jackson, was a wharfinger living in Holt Street in 1818. He with a partner, John Howell, advertised in Wrightsons Trienniel Directory in 1928-29 offering 'Conveyance by Water' between Coventry and Birmingham and Derby and Newark. He was still living in Holt St in 1941 describing himself as a carrier. I understand a wharfinger was connected with canals but can anyone give me more information on his job and possible lifestyle.
