Thomas Surman was a Troop Sergeant Major in the 14th he was awarded thr Peninsular medal with the bars for the battles of Orthes and Toulouse. My ancestor William NEWMAN was also a Troop Sergeant Major in the 14th and retired in 1835 to spend the rest of his life in New John Street West, Birmingham. It is possible, knowing his Name and regiment to get a copy of his papers (I think from PRO ) which will not only give full details of his army career but also will give you a description of him, fascinating. -----Original Message----- From: eng-warks-birmingham-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-warks-birmingham-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of John S Sermon Sent: 24 November 2006 12:20 To: eng-warks-birmingham@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [B'ham] Surman family from Warwickshire, 1871 Census Thomas was born 1795 in Inkberrow Worcestershire the son of Thomas (a Baker) + ElizabethSURMAN (nee PAYTON) He Served in the 14th Dragoons 1813 until 1835 when he was discharged a Chelsea Out-Pensioner He married Caroline BIRCH of Solihull in 1836, they had no children and kept the Lamb and Flag in the Tything in Worcester where his widow continued until she died in 1880 aged 64 What Thomas did during his time in the Cavalry I have not researched but I know he was married and presumably had children but it would be necessary to look in the War Office archives at the National Archives in Kew for the records of the 14th Dragoons I have never been able to find out why he died in Bideford in Devon inn 1872 aged 77?
