Hi List Does anyone have an Eliza JONES (nee EGERTON) who was a widow living in Birmingham prior to1880? When she married again (Dec qtr 1880) to John CARTER, she gave her father's name as James EGERTON (deceased) a labourer, and her address at marriage was Upton on Severn, Worcs. It is possible that her father could be William rather than James EGERTON as her bridegroom's father was actually James CARTER but he is listed on the marriage cert as William CARTER and I'm wondering whether the two names got transposed - unless John was losing it by then! At date of their marriage, John said he was 76 and Eliza 73. John was really 72. Eliza signed x on marriage cert. Witnesses at their wedding were Henry BRICK and Harriett WILLIAMS. Neither of these two are related to John CARTER. On 1881 census they are living in Upton on Severn. John died in 1884. I don't know when Eliza died. On all censuses from 1851, John was a shoemaker in Birmingham. Prior to 1848 he was in the East Indies with East India Trading Company for many years, and was in receipt of an EIC pension when he died. His pension was only sent to Upton on Severn after 1880 which suggests he was possibly still in the Birmingham area immediately prior to his marriage to Eliza. I would love to know more about Eliza and her background if anyone has any connection to her. Many thanks Barbara
