    3. I obtained a death certificate for my grandfather, who was killed defending withdrawing troops near Dunkirk. The certificate I got seemed brand new, and his place of death was given as "Belgium and France" - quite a feat. I don't think anyone making out a certificate at the time wouyld have made that mistake. Therefore, I concluded trhat a death certificate for a deceased serviceman was only made out when it was asked for ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wendy Partridge" <wendy.partridge@ntlworld.com> To: <eng-warks-birmingham@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, November 17, 2006 6:20 PM Subject: Re: [B'ham] Death certificate > Hello Hilary > > I have tried this site without any luck. 3. John, In First World War all deaths on Western Front were listed as 'France & Flanders' even though they usually knew exactly where a serviceman had been killed. The situation in 1940 was a lot more confused. Troops fought in both France and Belgium and in the state of the nation post-Dunkirk the authorities simply would not have known where everyone had died. 3. Hi John Dodd and Wendy Partridge et al. John, Birth certs applied for from the GRO are always copies of the original, or I assume in place of KIA during the world wars, one filled out as best as they can with the information they have available to them. You will never get the original whatever or whoever you are except when you are registering a bmd for a person at that moment. You can also send off for records of servicemen through their relevant service record centres. After 1920 send to Glasgow, before send to Hayes. IF you would like the addresses, email off-list please. Wendy, have you checked out the 'Seaman's records' on the Archives site, they have just released those for viewing, if your person is there, it will come up with vague information relating to them, then you will be able to prchase that records by download, my last one cost me £3.50 for an A4 page, but it will depend on how much info is available, it could be many pages, all A4 size. Hope this has helped both. Happy hunting, Mick McAllister www.dig4ancestors.co.uk ----- Original Message ----- From: "john dodd" <jl.dodd@ntlworld.com> To: <eng-warks-birmingham@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, November 17, 2006 9:00 PM Subject: Re: [B'ham] Death certificate >I obtained a death certificate for my grandfather, who was killed defending >withdrawing troops near Dunkirk.
