Kia Ora Gerry Personally I think it is well worth purchasing death certs of direct ancestors. B'ham Records Office is particularly helpful if you specify what you want and add any additional info you may have which might identify the informant. ( In John's case it might be his wife or an elder child for example. You could specify where they were living in the 1881 census as well.) You can use VISA and you will get an address, age, cause of death, informant (if not known to you check the previous & next census for clues), occupation etc. My Aston ancestors died 1904- 1910 and are buried in Yardley Cemetery if that is any help. More informative than most birth certs and it is interesting to see if causes of death are inherited afflictions...??. Failing that you can search/ask for burials which will give you an approximation of the date of death.
