In my case the decree nisi finalising the 1st marriage was issued in September and the 2nd marriage took place in November of the same year. I found them very helpful at the Principal Registry of the Family Division, and found out not only the date of the divorce but also the grounds for divorce, and also the date and place of the first marriage. The Decree Nisi Absolute cost about £20-25 (can't remember exactly). The telephone number I have for Decree Absolute searches was 020 7947 7016/7017 if this is of help. Let me know how you get on.
