In regards to a previous post, Henry DAY and Caroline BALL DAY dying on the same day. This was an error in the facts I receieved. That is actually their wedding date. They did however die in the Workhouse Western Rd. UD. They were fairly elderly when they were there can anyone tell me what work was expected of them there? Thanks, Karen
Karen, One of my ancestors had been a Watchmaker for most of his life but due to his children being ill and his wife's early death he ended up with no money. He also died in a Workhouse but I believe it was more like a public hospital as we understand it today. Some people were actually known to be happy there (as per article in a recent Family History Magazine) Jan ----- Original Message ----- From: <angeloleto@bellsouth.net> To: <ENG-WARKS-BIRMINGHAM@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 08, 2007 9:00 AM Subject: [B'ham] Henry DAY and Caroline BALL DAY Workhouse > In regards to a previous post, Henry DAY and Caroline BALL DAY dying on > the same day. Put "Workhouses England" into Google and you will find a site which shows most of the County workhouses, the diets "enjoyed" by inmates, other conditions, plans of the buildings and an indication whether papers might be available for inmates for the years you are seeking. Similarly try for asylums - people are found on censuses often by initials only. If you are seeking papers you may get; Admission Papers Creed Registers Departure Papers These may contain information about (if applicable) the health of the person, the date of admission, the reasons for admission, the religion, the tobacco allowance, date & place of burial. Well worth getting if you're lucky and the Records have survived. Good luck Marlene.
