G'day Gerry, A Carter was someone who had a cart which would be used to transport goods. A Carters Boy would be his assistant...usually of a very young age. There were huge ammunitions factories in Brum ..in particular the BSA plant (British Small Arms) , a fortress like building which stretched from the railway line to the canal and expanded up to Golden Hillock Road. Terraced houses were built for key workers in Armoury Road and the Spark Brook divided the buildings from the Proof House shooting ranges.
