    3. This is probably his birth registration, in the first quarter of 1859. Surname  First name(s)    District  Vol  Page  Births Mar 1859   (>99%) MACDONALD  Robert    Birmingham  6d 118 If you send for his birth certificate (see http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ ) this will give you his mother's maiden name. The other thing you could do is look for their marriage. There is a possible brother christened at St Judes in 1857 JOHN MAC DONALD   Male     Event(s): Birth:  Christening:  04 JAN 1857   Saint Jude, Birmingham, Warwick, England Death:  Burial:  Parents:   Father:  ROBERT MAC DONALD Family   Mother:  ELIZA   According to the 1861 census, both Eliza and Robert senior came from Sheffield in Yorkshire, so you might look for a marriage there, as I can't see one immediately in Birmingham Name: Eliza McDonald Age: 25 Estimated birth year: abt 1836 Relation: Wife Spouse's name: Robert Gender: Female Where born: Sheffield, Yorkshire, England Name: Robert McDonald Age: 26 Estimated birth year: abt 1835 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Eliza Gender: Male Where born: Sheffield, Yorkshire, England Civil parish: Birmingham Ecclesiastical parish: St Jude Town: Birmingham County/Island: Warwickshire Country: England Registration district: Birmingham Sub-registration district: St Philip ED, institution, or vessel: 6 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 127 Household Members: Name Age Eliza McDonald 25 John McDonald 4 Robert McDonald 26 Robert McDonald 2 William McDonald 2 It looks as if his father died, his mother remarried, then she died by the 1871 census, if this is the same Robert Name: Robt McDonald Age: 13 Estimated birth year: abt 1858 Relation: Stepson Gender: Male Where born: Birmingham, Warwickshire, England Civil parish: Stranton Town: West Hartlepool County/Island: Durham Country: England Registration district: Hartlepool Sub-registration district: Hartlepool ED, institution, or vessel: 35 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 42 Household Members: Name Age Eliza Cliff 4 months Thomas Cliff 5 William Cliff 40 - widower William Cliff 1 Robt McDonald 13 HTH Anne On 8 Jan 2007, at 16:03, peter hanlon wrote: > Hello All > My Great grandfather Robert Macdonald was christened at St > Judes church in Birmingham on the 23Jan 1859, his father was called > robert and his Mother was called Eliza, he also had a older brother > called John.(source IGI) > Could any of you good people tell me of a way of finding > the surname of his mother Eliza, mayby from church records or some > means and also the history of St Jues. > > Thanking you > Peter > Hartlepool

    3. Peter, hello, Have you thought about applying for Robert's birth certificate from Birmingham Register Office. I have always found them extremely helpful and if you stipulate that the mother's name on the birth certificate MUST be Eliza and that Robert was born between approx. 1857 and 1859 I'm sure they will help. If their search is unsuccessful they will refund your £7.00 cheque.
