    1. [B'ham] Ann Scotten - quaker testimony

    3. A Testimony from the quarterly Meeting of Birmingham, concerning Ann Scotten "Our dear Friend, Ann Scotten, was Daughter of that worthy and eminent Servant of the Lord in his Day, John Banks of Cumberland. And having the Advantage of so pious an Example, as well as Education, she became a sober virtuous young Woman. She was married to Stephen Scotten of Coventry, in the Year 1700, and was a loving and faithful Wife, a tender and affectionate Mother, a sincere Friend. She had a great Love for Friends who travelled in the Ministry and her Heart and House were always open to receive them. She came forth in the Ministry in the Year 1711, we believe, according to the Will of God. She was a Woman of a good natural Understanding, sound in Ministry, weighty and fervent in Prayer, stedfast in the Faith and Doctrines of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, as she had experienced the Virtue and Efficacy of his Power to be her Comfort in Affliction , and support in the Ministry. She was often zealously concerned to recommend as steady Dependence upon him, in whom is Salvation and Strength; and though she was not large in her Testimony, yet in her Ministry she was frequently divinely favoured, to the Edification and Comfort of the Church. She travelled in divers Counties in this Nation, in the Work of the Ministry, and her Labour therein was acceptable. She was very serviceable in our Womens Meeting of the Business, was much concerned for the Honour of God, and the Peace and Concord if the Church. She was an Example of Piety to her Neighbours; and it may be truly said, she adorned the Doctrine of God our Saviour by a sober and godly Conversation amongst them, by whom she was well respected, and her Death much lamented. In her last illness she seemed fully resigned to the Will of God. She often spoke of the Peace of Soul she enjoyed, and said that nothing stood in her Way. We have no reason to doubt but she finished her Course with Joy, and is at Rest with the Faithful. She quietly departed this Life the 21st of the Tenth Month 1739, in the Sixty eighth Year of her Age ; a Minister about 28 Years." Hope she belongs to someone Ros

    1. [B'ham] Jane Briscoe - quaker testimony - ref to William Dewsbury

    3. "A testimony from the Quarterly Meeting of Birmingham concerning Jane Briscoe Jane Briscoe, late of Warwick, was born the 30th of the Ninth Month 1654. In her youthful Days, she was under Convictions for some time before she frequented our Meetings, which was about the Twenty first Year of her Age; for which she endured a great deal of hard Speeches from her Father and other Relations; yet this did not daunt her religious Courage and Resolution to suffer Affliction for Truth's sake, rather than enjoy the sinful Pleasures of this momentary Life. And this her steady Conduct in the Path of Truth, gained such an Ascendency over her Father, that upon his Death bed he was reconciled to her, and desired that God would direct her for the best. Her great Respect for William Dewsbury was very conspicuous, with whom she lived as a Servant for many Years, waiting upon his very dutifully in his Confinement, and was faithfully managing his Business, which was entrusted to her, while he was a Prisoner on Account of Religion: She attended him in his last Illness, and has been heard to say, She thought she had Reason to bless God, that her Lot was to live with him: Whose good Example encouraged her in Faithfulness to the divine Discoveries received, wherein she made such Advances, that it pleased the Divine Being, about the Year 1677, to bestow on her a Gift in the Ministry, which she faithfully discharged, not by enticing Words of Man's Wisdom, but in the Demonstration of the Spirit and of Power. She mightily desired, that Truth might prosper in the Hearts of the Youth; and had a frequent Concern in Meetings, to pray to the Almighty for a Blessing upon the Children of his People. She was zealous in the Discharge of her Duty in the Ministry. Her Doctrine was enforced by a sober Life and godly Conversation, which made her Ministry the more acceptable to her Hearers. She was a diligent Frequenter of Meetings, as long as she was able to attend them; and many times, when bodily Weakness would not permit her to go on Foot to Meeting, in the same Town where she resided, she used to be carried on Horseback. She would often say, I love to go to Meetings; and very much desired, that all Friends would be as diligent as might be in attending them, while they had Health and Strength. She was charitably disposed towards the Poor, whom she liberally relieved. She had a great Deal of Illness some Years before her Death which she bore with Christian Fortitude; and would often say, She would be very willing to die; but desired, she might patiently wait for the Lord's Time. One Time in her last Illness, she said, If these Bodily Afflictions were over, all would be well, and I shall be where the Weary are at Rest. She several Times said, I wait for my Change; and often signified, the Lord was good to her, and refreshed her Soul in the Nightseason, when she could not sleep. She often pressed her Children and Family to seek the Lord, and to live in his Fear, and to wait for the Guidance of the Spirit of Truth, which is able to preserve out of every evil Way, and will certainly lead them, who truly follow and obey it, through the Troubles of this Life, to Peace and Rest for evermore. Thus this our worthy Friend, having patiently waited for her Change, and surmounted the Difficulties of Mutability, was gathered like an Ear of Corn fully ripe, into the Garner of Eternity, in the Eighty Eighth Year of her Age, and has left behind her a Memorial of a good Report and sweet Savour, worhty to be followed by her Survivors. She departed this Life the 31st of the fifth Month, and was interred in Friends Burying Ground in Warwick, the 3rd of the sixth Month 1742." Curious her family is not mentioned by name! Ros

    1. [B'ham] John Hands - quaker testimony

    3. A Testimony from the quarterly Meeting in Birmingham concerning John Hands Our dear deceased Friend, John Hands, was born at Warwick, the 15th of the Twelfth Month, in the Year 1656. His Parents, who were of the Church of England, were honest and zealous People, and had this their Son, as well as the rest of their Children, educated after the most strict Manner thereof; but by a Paper of his own Hand-writing it appears, that even whilst he was very young, he was dissatisfied with that Way of Worship, not finding thereby the Wants of his Soul satisfied, which thirsted after something more substantial than Externals could administer to it; and that nothing short of the Bread of Life would relieve and satisfie him: Yet though he was secretly convinced, and had this Satisfaction given him, That such of the People called Quakers, who were faithful to the Manifestation of the Spirit of God in their own Hearts , were the People of the Lord, he did not for many Years after join in Society with them. But about the Beginning of the Year 1677, he being at the Congregation he assembled with, in their publick Place of Worship, and attempting to join them in singing Psalms, the Lord smote him for the same; and then and there, under great Sorrow for his former Unfaithfulness, he came to a Resolution, through the Lord's Assistance, never more to join with them in their Worship. So the Lord, says he in the Paper above mentioned, brought me out from amongst them by his divine Power. From which Time he became a zealous and constant Frequenter of Friends Meetings, was a good example in strictly keeping to the Time appointed, and watching diligently against Dulness and an unconcerned Spirit therein; and so continued until old Age and Infirmities rendered him uncapable to attend them. In the same Year he joined in Society with Friends, he received a Gift in the Ministry, in which he faithfully laboured. He visited Meetings in this and several adjacent Counties, in which his Service was very acceptable, his ministy being not in the enticing Words of Man's Wisdom, but in the Demonstration of the Spirit, and also holding fast the Form of sound Words. He was not often very large in Testimony, but powerful and affecting; and his Conversation adorned the Doctrine of God our Saviour; for which he was generally esteemed amongst Friends, and of good Report amongst all Sorts of People. A Year or more before his Death, he was through Weakness of Body, frequently confined at home; yet seemed much pleased with Visits of Friends. When very weak in Body, he signified he was not afraid to die, the Sting of Death being taken away. Weakness and the Decays of Nature, through Age, gradually increased upon him till the 28th of the Tenth Month 1739, when he departed this Life in great Peace with God, we doubt not, and in the Love and Unity of Friends. Aged near Eighty three, a minister about 62 years." Hope someone owns this one as a twig since he seems not to have married ... Ros
