    3. In the 1920's my father re-covered the folding canvas roof of a Charabanc belonging to Charles Hull's Garage at Hockley Heath on the Birmingham / Stratford Road. Dad had purchased a Singer hand drive sewing machine to tackle the job, the remarkable thing was that Dad had lost his left hand badly injured his right hand so that he could only move two fingers and his thumb. This was before he had married Mum and the sewing machine was used by all the family until 1950. I found it difficult to use it with two thicknesses of ordinary material, how Dad managed the long length of the roof I will never know. Bill ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gordon Chatfield" <[email protected]> <Wikipedia says this; A charabanc (pronounced sha-ra-bang) [also spelt "char-à-banc"] is a type of horse-drawn vehicle or motor coach, usually open-topped, common in Britain
