I have just looked at the electoral rolls on the Midlands History site and found my gr,grandfather. As it does not list his wife, can SKS tell me whether or not it was compulsory for women to vote in the early 1900's. Many thanks in anticipation, Kerry from Queensland, Australia
Hi Kerry As far as I understand it, women weren't *allowed* to vote in Britain until February 1918, when the Representation of the People Act gave the vote to women over the age of 30... I'm sure someone with more knowledge will correct me if I've got my facts or interpretation wrong! Hi Kerry To the best of my knowledge its never been compulsory for anyone to vote in the UK (unlike Australia where it is I gather) In the UK, until 1918 when women of 30 or over got the full vote there was only very limited voting for women in local elections but not National Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) >I have just looked at the electoral rolls on the Midlands History site and > found my gr,grandfather. In parliamentary election women over 30 did not get the vote until 1920, and women over 21 until 1928≥ Women property owners did have a vot ein local elections before this - but they were few and far between! Kerry: The early 1900s were the period of the suffragettes, campaigning for "Votes for Women". Women didn't get the vote in the UK until 1918, when those over 30 were allowed to vote. In 1928 this was extended to women over 21 - as for men. It has never been compulsory for anyone to vote in UK. In the early 1900's only a woman owning land in her own right would have been allowed to vote and they were very few and far between. Some women were granted the vote in 1918 but for most women in UK It was not until 1928 that they were allowed to vote.
