This is an army rather than a Birmingham question but any guidance appreciated. Would the English wife of an British Indian Army NCO who died in India in about 1903 have a British Death Certificate? Also if they were both in India in 1891 and 1901 would he or they appear on a British census return (I ask that because I can't find them!). thanks Dave Carr Paignton Devon
Hi Dave The death would be in the overseas indexes rather than the usual GRO index That is if was registered, many were not www.familyrelatives.com are one site that have them, some of the overseas indexes are free on this site only They would not be recorded in a census other than in the Country they resided (if there was one) largely these no longer exist The first census to record overseas Military personnel is the 1911 Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > This is an army rather than a Birmingham question but any guidance > appreciated. > > Would the English wife of an British Indian Army NCO who died in > India in about 1903 have a British Death Certificate? > > Also if they were both in India in 1891 and 1901 would he or they > appear on a British census return (I ask that because I can't find > them!). > > thanks > > Dave Carr > Paignton > Devon
Hi Dave The issue as regards a British Death Certificate is a bit of a ticklish question! I would suggest that you check all of the following indices (via "Ancestry" and /or "findmypast"?): Service (Army) Deaths Consular Deaths Overseas Deaths Whether or not you will find anything remains to be seen - but good luck! It is extremely unlikely that you will find her on the British 1891 and 1901 censuses. There is an outside chance that you *might* find him if his army unit got recorded, given that they were official British ex-pats, but I would not like to put any money on your doing so! Ken.
