He inherited the business of Gilt Toy and Spectacle maker from his uncles Josiah and George Richards. He was later a Governor of King Edward School and founded the business of Elkington & Co. in 1830 after inheriting his uncle's business. He was a magistrate in 1856 and ended up a very wealthy man.
