    3. Does anyone have any information on the family of Alfred Jones born c. 1853 son of Susannah Jones in Birmingham. Susannah married George Dabbs in 1857 and then Arthur Buggins in 1876 and died in 1901 in the Aston registration district Alfred can be found in the 1881 census in Bishop Ryder parish in Birmingham using the name Theophilus and is married to Mary, his mother in law, Mary Murphy, is in the house with them. I'm looking to find anything about any of the above after 1881, I have the 1901 census for Arthur Buggins & Susannah. Thanks Peter

    3. Hi Marlene, Good to hear from you, haven't been back to you as my young foster child has been very ill. I certainly did follow up. Young Annie's birth cert doesn't give any more details than I already had. Minnie Rose is not related, it's definitely Mina (name passed down through generations) Still not been able to get the Irish 1901 census, most of it is not on line but hopefully when I do get to see it, Bessie Mina will show up traveling with John and Annie Linehan and the young Mina. I've searched and put messages up on my Ancestry.co.uk and Genes reunited but nothing as yet for the two younger Linehan girls...there's a strong US connection so they may turn up there. I'm in contact with descendants of the Pool family from Warwick and Birmingham but none seem to have known anything about Annie Louise, she last turns up on the UK census 1891 living in a boarding house in Kingston Hull as a musician, Mini aged 4 years is with her. Very odd she married Frederick Dowler 1889 but in 1891 she is back to her surname of Pool as is Mina...I presume shortly after 1891 she met John Linehan and they moved to Ireland. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marlene Shipman" <marlene.s@xtra.co.nz> To: <eng-warks-birmingham@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 22, 2009 12:31 PM Subject: Re: [B'ham] Pool Warwickshire and Birmingham > Jackie I answered your query in full on 1 September 2009. 3. Hi Barbara, My immediate reaction was exactly that.......... but by the time of the 1911 Irish census, Bessie Mina (born 1887 Birmingham) was also living in Ireland and married to Thomas Brennan. They already had 2 children Lydia and Mary, unfortunately they don't show up on the census, probably because they were traveling musicians. It's such a mystery. Your right in thinking that Bessie Mina used her stepfather's name (John Linehan's) she married Co Cavan 1907 in the name of Bessie Mina Linehan, apparently she didn't know that she was the daughter of Frederick Dowler until her mother Annie Louise died. 2. John Ball
    3. Dear Judy, Carl Chinn refers to Summer Hill in his book "Our Brum - Volume 2", Birmingham Evening Mail, 1992 (ISBN 0-9534316-0-6). On page 67 he writes about the population density of inner Birmingham: ---------------- The whole of old Brum came to just 2995 acres - and by 1831 there were 142,000 people crowded on to that small space. Yet not all of that land was built up. Most of Brum's folk were packed into the even more limited district east of Monument Road and Icknield Street. Spreading out from the Bull Ring, they were gathered densely into old houses and back-to-backs around Digbeth, Hurst Street, Holloway Head, Newtown Row and the Jewellery Quarter. Beyond Summer Hill and Spring Hill there were few houses, shops and factories. . . . . ---------------- The implication of the last sentence is that even in the early 19th century, Summer Hill and Spring Hill *were* occupied by back-to-back houses, shops and factories. Perhaps early the trades directories would give you a better idea of the occupancy of Summer Hill? 3. Hi My family grew up in the Ladywood area and there's a great website for the area - or Brookfields as it was also known (Ladywood being part of Brookfields) and Summerhill is mentioned on it too. (Ted Rudge does another site on Windsor Green too). Google Brookfields and you'll get the following. When in Brookfields site click on 'Streets' and there's an A-Z of streets with personal memories from people, old photos. (below is the google link you want) Historically Brookfieldswas part of BirminghamHeath, a great expanse of ...BrookfieldsSchool Pitsford Street built in 1877 by the BirminghamSchool ... www.ted.rudge.btinternet.co.uk/id12.htm - Cached - Similar Hope that helps. I could spend hours on this site, brings a lot of history alive to me. Also, I left a message on the site re anyone who had known my family and got replies. (Hands up, who else knew that the film 'Cathy Come Home' was partly filmed in Prescott Street, Ladywood?!) Lesley ________________________________

The family had lived there for some time. Summer Hill Rd was part of the main route out of B'ham, starting as Summer Row, then the Parade, then Sand Pits, then Summer Hill Road, then continuing as Spring Hill and then Dudley Rd. Summer Hill Terrace was terrace of houses running parallel to but overlooking 'Sand Pits'. At that time it had a high population density, with rows of workers' houses and lots of small factories and people working at home, on the fringe of the Jewellery Quarter. Google maps shows the area at: http://tinyurl.com/yffnm2u It's undergone rather drastic 20th century slum clearance and urban renewal, so I suspect that very few of the buildings shown on the Google satellite map date back more than 40 years or so. My great grandfather worked as a rule-maker at a toolmaker's factory in Camden Road, close to Summer Hill Road. I believe I have a few pictures of Camden Rd, taken in the early 1980s, before all the old buildings were knocked down. I'll look them out for you.
