I originaly sent this to the Warwickshire list and was advised to post it to this list as well. This is my daughter in laws family and I would appreciate some help/advice. Alfred Eccleston(b. 1860 Birmingham) married Rosina Turner(b. 1861 Birmingham) in 1882. They had six children all born in Birmingham-Arther 1884, Florence 1886, Lydia 1891, George 1893, Albert 1891 and Leonard 1903. Rosina died February 1906 age 45.I do not yet know when Alfred died, but he was also quite young. Albert and Leonard went to live with a Grannie Lacey-seemingly not a relative -and not with an older sibling. In 1938 Leonard married Leah Minnie Gill and at some point Albert married Nellie Lacey. Leonards son, David, would like to find out more about Grannie Lacey but there is not much to go on. He remembers visiting her late 1940's early 1950's when she was living on Cattell Road and had a green grocery shop. He does not know her christian name or age.( I originaly asked about Trade Directories and a gentleman sent some entries-her name was Ellen and the house number was 150) I would like to know if there is anywhere else I might look to see who lived with her?( Hopefully on line as I live in Kent.)I have found a possible Ellen Lacey and family in 1901 but connot find them further back. David can remember talk of an Uncle Bob Brettle, a fighter and feels there may be a link to the Lacey family.(There is a link to the Eccleston family as Rosina's mother, Elizabeth, was a Brettle before her marriage)I have found a little on Bob Brettle but as yet no connection. If anyone else has any of these names in their family, please get in touch. Thank you for reading the above, Ann Owen

Hello Tony, Thre are lots of references to gun making in Brum in "The Rise of the Manufacturing Town..Birmingham and the Industrial Revolution" by Eric Hopkins (1998 Sutton Publishing Company, Gloucestershire) It's a fascinating look at Birmingham with lots of factual details and pictures. Hello Anthony, I am writing a book on a specific period of Birmingham's gun industry, and have a little info' for you. William Pinner was a gun, rifle and pistol maker from 1866 to 1868, possibly longer. His business was listed at 8 court, Loveday Street. In 1877 there was also a William M. Pinner at 29, Whittall Street. These are probably the same man. This period that Pinner worked in was one of great change in the gun industry, namely the advent of breech loaders and also the volume of work that was taken from the B'ham makers by foreign imports. In the military branch of the trade much of their work was taken over by the B.S.A. and others. These may be the reasons for his relatively short stint in the trade. For further reading there are numerous books available through your local library covering the industry generally, viz:- The Birmingham Gun Trade by David Williams and another by Douglas Tate that are both very informative. Hope this helps. Regards, Mike Nicholls. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anthony Hofstee" <ahofstee@sympatico.ca> To: <ENG-WARKS-BIRMINGHAM@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 16, 2006 3:46 AM Subject: [B'ham] Rifle tester, gun finisher in 1870's, 1880's (PINNER/PENNER) > Was there a factory producing guns and/or rifles in Birmingham during > the 1870's and 1880's? I found them very helpful at the Principal Registry of the Family Division, and found out not only the date of the divorce but also the grounds for divorce, and also the date and place of the first marriage. The Decree Nisi Absolute cost about £20-25 (can't remember exactly). The telephone number I have for Decree Absolute searches was 020 7947 7016/7017 if this is of help. Let me know how you get on. Hi Anthony I have connections with Birmingham gunmakers, and I know that it was a centre for this industry, as well as London. He could have worked in a gunmaker shop at the back, perhaps. My gunmakers were MURCOTTs and HARDINGs, although my line had moved to London well before the end of the 19th century.
