St Judes was Church of England to the best of my knowledge. I will let you know when I get a photo, and post a message on list just in case others want to have a copy. Robyn My thoughts are that you probably will not find much information on the internet about prisons currently open for security reasons. Information about the building and the architect etc, can probably be obtained from Birmingham library, but I doubt you will find a lot of info. what information did you require? The Prison Archives are at Newbold Revell, but it's very difficult to get a telephone number - I tried and had little luck, but then I got it via someone who worked for the Prison Service. That was some years ago now and I did not keep it. Perhaps you should write to them, giving all details. Newbold Revell is in Warwickshire, near Rubgy. Peter, you are lucky that it only costs you 7 pounds. Overseas people have to buy sterling cheques and stuff, and end up paying a lot more for the same thing. It is a worry when you have a common name and so each member of the family calls their kids the same names and so on. You never know whose kid is James or William, could be any of the brother's kids. My lot is SMALL, mostly William or John, aaagghh. robyn, qld. oz. ----- Original Message ----- From: "peter hanlon" <p.anluain2@ntlworld.com> To: <eng-warks-birmingham@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 10, 2007 6:37 AM Subject: [B'ham] MacDonald Thank you all very much for your advice re Robert Macdonald born in Birmingham. I'm with Robyn on her suggestions... I had a relative as well who was in the British Military involved in activities in Ireland during that same era...He does not exist anymore on anything but his WW1 record- no police record on him either when he served with a police force in N. Ireland....30 yrs after his death, the family secret came out... he was involved in the Black & Tans...those records were destroyed. It took me years to find an immigration record on him...they lied on their name & nationality to get here. Hi Listers Can anyone tell me, please, how one might gain info about a Court Martial held about 1920 ? I have the Regiment, the soldiers number and an original record which states "Proceedings ...blah blah.....All records of the Conviction have been erased from this mans records" I ought perhaps to add that this was a British Soldier in Dublin. Curious eh ? Jilly

Peter, hello, Have you thought about applying for Robert's birth certificate from Birmingham Register Office. I have always found them extremely helpful and if you stipulate that the mother's name on the birth certificate MUST be Eliza and that Robert was born between approx. 1857 and 1859 I'm sure they will help. If their search is unsuccessful they will refund your £7.00 cheque. Hi Guys, Happy New Year to all. I assume the Birmingham executions were carried out at Winwons Green Prison? As the official executioner, I recall that in his hay day, Pierpoint traveled to work? I think it was his most notorious remark was to the question, " Mr Pierpoint, how have you carried out your work for so long?" Albert replied, " I found it easier to give up smoking! " Best wishes to all on this windy, rainswept night in Kent. Vic Kent, UK
Albert Pierpoint the executioner played tennis with my late neighbour Jasper Hankinson several times in the Birmingham area at a Civil Service Sports club. Jasper had been a Labour Exchange Manager and died three years ago aged 107, he received his pension for far more years than he worked. I just worked out how many more UK census I be would be able to view if I lived to be that age!
