A Carter may own his waggon and could run his own businesss which would probably be more lucrative than working in a factory/workshop. Thank you Anne, for the suggestion. I had a look through the site you suggested last night but so far haven't been able to come up with any thing on William Livingstone or his uncle Christopher in Birmingham in 1870's. Will keep looking though. Once again Thank you Regards, Chris
Hi List I have just found out that my great aunt Lydia GOODES's maiden name was NIBLETT, and that she married Great Uncle Fred in 1927 in Birmingham, having been born in Birmingham in 1905. Does anyone have any NIBLETTs lurking in their line anywhere? Hello Gerry I believe Kynock's in Witton was the largest munitions factory in Europe, later to become ICI. My aunt who lived in Bevington Road Aston worked there for many years, before, during and after the war. I am not sure when it started though. Hi Jan, I found this: My ancestor Mary Ann Onions was born in 1803 to James and Martha Onions. She married Joseph Spencer, Builder, in about 1820 [09 NOV 1820]. Her son Joseph Onions Spencer was a bellows manufacturer. I am seeking any information about the history of the Onions family and the Iron Foundries they owned in the 18th-19th centuries. Thanks! -- Doug Hawkes e-mail: dhawkes@ee.ryerson.ca > Can anyone find Joseph Spencer, born 1800, in Brum. Hello again Gerry, The previously mentioned book contains a number of relevant pictures, mostly taken in the early part of the 20th century. Another photo depicts Small Heath and Sparkbrook railway station with a caption telling us "It was opened in 1863 by the Great Western Railway to serve the new BSA works and the growing population in both districts." G'day Gerry, A Carter was someone who had a cart which would be used to transport goods. A Carters Boy would be his assistant...usually of a very young age. There were huge ammunitions factories in Brum ..in particular the BSA plant (British Small Arms) , a fortress like building which stretched from the railway line to the canal and expanded up to Golden Hillock Road. Terraced houses were built for key workers in Armoury Road and the Spark Brook divided the buildings from the Proof House shooting ranges. (See more in Small Heath and Sparkbrook (Images of England ) by Margaret D Green Jan in sunny Queensland. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gerry Edwards" <jedwac342@rogers.com> To: <eng-warks-birmingham@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 20, 2007 9:50 AM Subject: [B'ham] Occupations- Carters boy and ammunition maker > Hello Lidsters: > > Can anyone tell me what a carters boy would be. > Also I have a great grandmother who worked as an ammunition maker in the > Aston area. A carter drove a cart or wagon. A carter's boy would be his helper. I have a carter who was previously a gold beater, metal roller. I imagine he was injured and became a carter. Kathryne
