Reg, The Independent Order of Good Templars was a temperance organisation founded in the USA which spread to the UK with its first lodge in Birmingham. Perhaps your great-uncle belonged to this order, and therefore his children were given places in the orphanage after he died, while their mother went out to work. These friendly societies tended to act like an insurance company to help out their members when they fell on hard times, before the days of the Health Service and Social Service. As far as I can find out, the orphanage at Sunbury was the only one. John, you could try Carl Chinn direct at the Brummagem, I'm sure he'd know & wouldn't mind. [email protected] Jane John Ford <[email protected]> wrote: Hi everyone. Hi everyone. Could anyone tell me where I might get a copy of a DVD called " Birmingham in the Blitz", I have tried Amazon but they only have a used copy on tape. If anyone could tell me and give a website, I would be very greatful. Best Regards, John
In the 1901 census, I found the two youngest children of my great uncle in the Good Templar and Temperance Orphanage, Sunbury Middlesex. Both children were born in Birmingham and their mother (my g-uncle having died in 1896) and their two older siblings were still living in Birmingham. Is there any reason why these children would be placed there as opposed to an orphanage in Birmingham. Reg Wesson Burlington Canada
Hello Ken - > Administrator Wendy, > I have not unsubscribed but am not getting many messgaes through, is there > any problem? I suggest for another time you check the archives - http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index?list=eng-warks-birmingham and then you can see if you're missing any posts. Good Afternoon Everyone, I would like some advice, I have been a subscriber to findmypast.com for the last 12 months. I now feel, that I should change the website from where I obtain my information and I was wondering, if anyone has been a subscriber to ancestory.com and if they thought that the annual subscription gave good value for money. I would add, that I have been pleased with all the information I have obtained from findmypast.com. Your comments would be greatly appreciated. Kath Sutton West Midlands UK

Phil, thanks for your quick reply. I was looking for a Sarah Taylor quite a bit younger living in Birmingham. Also, our Wesson's go back to about 1790's in Nottingham. Will keep looking though.
