    3. Hello all, I have been corresponding with Linda for a few weeks now and it is clearly time that I introduced myself to the list. My primary interest is Heptonstall from where the family originate. Some of my family emigrated from Heptonstall to the Rossendale Valley and thence to Burnley where I was born. Others preferred the move to Todmorden and they are detailed below. I have the following resources: 1821 Stansfield Census 1841, 51, 61, 71 ,91 census of Todmorden on permanent loan at local FHC. St Thomas Heptonstall baptisms 1661 to 1847 St Thomas Heptonstall and Cross Stone Marriages 1594-1837 St Thomas Heptonstall Burials 1594-1812 ( except surnames K-St ) Cross Stone Burials 1678-1851 ( except surnames K-St ) The usual books, ( John Fielden's Todmorden, A Way of Life, History of Todmorden, Pennine Valley and various smaller pamphlets.) Apart from the Sutcliffes detailed below I have an interest in: Sugdens of Stansfield Stells of Greenhurst Hey and Wickenberry Clough ( and before them the Soothills ) Greenwoods too numerous to mention. My Sutcliffes are: ( All siblings of my gggrandfather) John Sutcliffe (1806-82 ) and wife Betty (1813-93). Moved to Eagle St circa 1856 and stayed the rest of their lives. Their children were Ellen 1831-1911married Henry Bolton and later Thomas Stansfield. She was a widow for thirty years from his death. Crossley 1832-1859 Young b.1834 m Lydia Jeffs. Children George Henry, Crossley, Mary Ann, Walter, Bertha, Edith,Mabel, Harold. Lived Bride St. Stephen b. 1836 m Hannah Howarth. Lived Prince St. Ada b.1838 m 1859 John 1840-1898. Unmarried James Greenwood Sutcliffe b 1841 Martha b 1843 m Greenwood Hargreaves of Shade 1873. Edwin 1846 - 1894 m Ann Greenwood ( 1845-1914 ) in 1875. Successful Cotton Manufacturer. Lived Wellington Rd.buried Cross Stone. Benjamin b.1849 Sarah 1850-1938 Spinster. Charlotte Sutcliffe 1819-1905. Spinster.Sister of John. Was Housekeeper to Abraham Gibson at Greenwood Lee and John Lacy at Underbank Hall. Spent her retirement in Sandholme Villas in accomodation provided by her nephew Sugden Sutcliffe. Benjamin Sutcliffe 1824-1910. Brother of the above. Moved to Todmorden in 1859 from Heptonstall. Held many positions at Wellington Road Baptist Chapel and in the Temperance movement. Childless. Sarah Sutcliffe 1827-1897. Sister of the above. Moved to Todmorden in 1865 when married widower Greenwood Saville.( died 1892). Lived on White Platts St and Joshua St.Had illegitimate son Sugden Sutcliffe in 1850 and son George Saville in 1865.He married Sarah Ellen Stansfield from Shade. Sarah is buried at Cross Stone. Sugden Sutcliffe Illegitimate son of above Sarah. born 1850. Joined York Street Wesleyan Chapel in 1860s and remained a stalwart member and Office Holder for over 40 years.. President of Todmorden Band of Hope for many years.Married Sarah Ann Sutcliffe, daughter of James Sutcliffe of Oldroyd in 1873. In 1876 went into business with father in law and cousin Edwin in Hope St Shed. Room and 90 looms rented from Caleb Hoyle ( Later first mayor of Todmorden and father of Phillip Hoyle who married Sugden's daughter Elizabeth. I have visited their daughter Jenny Cockcroft several times at Oakhill). Built houses on Commercial Street. 1887.Member of Todmorden Local Board under John Fielden. Built his house, "Glenroyd". 1890-95 travelled extensively in Europe and The Holy Land. F.R.G.S. in 1891. 1896 elected one of the first 6 Aldermen of Todmorden. 1900 wife died and buried in Mankinholes. 1902-1908 President of the Liberal Club. 1902 married Elizabeth Maud Mary Suthers, 26 years his junior. October 1906 County Magistrate. 1910 Left Todmorden to live in Southport. 1916 Transferred his business S. and J.W.Sutcliffe at Sandholme and Anchor Sheds to Caleb Hoyle.(600 looms) Died 1925.
