Ramshaw's book "Concerning Todmorden Parish"despite its many failings does have a photograph of John SHACKLETON (died 1861,the last of a remarkable succession of Parish Clerks of that name) whose daughter Miss SHACKLETON of Rise Lane and whose grandfather and great g.father, both also named John SHACKLETON. The g.father died in 1841. There is a short section under the heading "Backbone" devoted to another of his namesakes who died 3rd Oct. 1820 at the age of 67. Another John S. - assistant parish overseer - had "his salary augmented from £42 to £45 per annum" and on the 3rd March 1825 this was further increased to £52. There is also a reference to the same Miss SHACKLETON of Rise Lane,Todmorden marrying "Mr. John WHITEHEAD,68,of Harbour Lane, Milnrow. There is probably more but it has to be teased out of a rather garbled text. 3. Ernest, Thanks for your reply. There were a lot of John SHACKLETONs! The one who died in 1820 age 67 is certainly my 4x gt grandfather, and I am descended from his son Henry. I have tied into my tree a John, baptised 10-12-1783, and another baptised 5-4-1820, and I know there were 'clerks' in the family. I would like to know more about these Johns, so thank you for your information. As is common at that time the SHACKLETONs had large families with the same first names used time and again so I'm inclined to err on the side of caution.
