    3. Hello everyone, This is not exactly gen. but nonetheless interesting social history. My grandma, Walsden born and bred, had a wonderful Lancashire dialect which she retained all her life, even after 40 years away from Walsden. One of her favourite expressions, when asked where she was going, was: "up suff an' rown't back o' Jossies." Has anyone else heard of this? Yes, it is good to see this list becoming more active. 3. Hi listers from all over, My problem with not being able to open PDF files from the internet has been solved by many of you listers. Apparently there were over 30 of you with the same problem! The majority of you told me to right click on the PDF link and save target to hard disk, then open it fro Acrobat. I tried this and it works, and also allows you to keep the file on disk to read off line at leisure. Many thanks to all of you, Linda Briggs

    3. Ernest, Thanks for your reply. There were a lot of John SHACKLETONs! The one who died in 1820 age 67 is certainly my 4x gt grandfather, and I am descended from his son Henry. I have tied into my tree a John, baptised 10-12-1783, and another baptised 5-4-1820, and I know there were 'clerks' in the family. I would like to know more about these Johns, so thank you for your information. As is common at that time the SHACKLETONs had large families with the same first names used time and again so I'm inclined to err on the side of caution. 3. Hi Sally, I have made this message high priority because I have been trying to get hold of that Travis book for years. The library in Tod. won't send it out on loan via the inter-library scheme. Is it a large book, or would some of it photocopy or scan? I have 3 of his other books which are great, but it's that one I want!!! Where did you get it from? That William Law you mention is my 2 x great grandfather. My Crossleys were inter-married with that branch of the Laws. Please reply, I'm so envious!! I have a lot of Tod. and Walden registers, census' and MI's etc. if I can help you. I work full time though, and also assist with a local Cub pack so if I'm sometimes a bit slow to respond please forgive me. One of the books, 'Walsden Families in Olden Times', by John Travis, which was published in 1903 contains a lot of information on family histories.Where the family originated, what they did for a living, who they married etc. The families mentioned are Fielden, Bottomley, Hollinrake, Howarth, Dawson, Hill, Greenwood, Taylor, Jackson, Schofield, Crossley, Law, Newell, Jackson, Haigh, Barker. 3. Hello all "A History of Todmorden" ISBN 1-85825-057-9 will check availability in local book stores and post results here. Perhaps copies of earlier book "The Fielden Trail" Jim Jarratt may be still available. ISBN 1-870071-15-8 Book is really a walking book detailing points of interest in the area connected to the Fieldens, and contains a wealth of history on the family and the town. There is a Quaker Burial ground on the hill just above the Unitarian Church (SHOEBROAD QUAKER BURIAL GROUND)but until recently Quakers were buried in unmarked graves so there is not a lot to see. There are though apparently 24 Quaker Fieldens buried here. Joshua Fielden (I) of Bottomley buried here 21/4/1693 followed by successive Joshuas. The last being 'Honest John's' father. Joshua Fielden (IV) of Edge End and later Waterside buried April 1811. Last Fielden buried here was Joshua's youngest surviving daughter, Salley Fielden. Died Waterside 18/9/1859 (79). Mary Fielden's aunt. Also buried here are John and Tamar Fielden of Todmorden Hall. Samuel and Joshua Fielden (2 of brothers to build Units. church) are buried just outside the church. John Fielden J.P. (3rd brother) is buried in Grinston Park near Leeds. Jack (Todmorden)

    3. Jack, My current searches into the FIELDENs of Todmorden are to try to establish whether and to what extent there was any truth in the belief held by a now deceased friend and in-law, Don Whitehead. Don believed that his James FIELDEN's tree was related to that of one of my own Social History heroes,John FIELDEN M.P. Don died before I was able to follow up his statement. It just happens that in my teaching days I had an academic interest in Social and Labour History so connections between branches and twigs on my Family Tree and Social matters interest me. The James FIELDEN referred to was only one of the 16 or so possible James FIELDENs in the 1881 Census.I have established that the James was the one who, in 1881, lived at No.4 Dobroyd and by 1911 was living at 2 Sanworth Street,Halifax Rd.,Todmorden. Don claimed that some of his other forebears were involved in the construction of the Castle. He also stated that the Castle, before it became a Religious Retreat, was owned by a direct descendant, an Air-line pilot, of John FIELDEN M.P. Regrettably Don died on the day our joint grand-child was married and his papers, which I had seen along with a Family Bible, are now missing. It is not my intention to compile the WHITEHEAD/FIELDEN family tree but for the sake of Don's widow and descendants I hope to cast some light on the mystery. In this respect, due mainly to people like Linda and others on this and other Lists, I now am aware of the large number of descendants of the original 17thC. FIELDING of Todmorden and with a bit more delving and corroboration I hope to pass the results of my search to my son-in-law and Don's and my grandchildren.
