    3. Dear Kent, It's those sort of stories that make family history worthwhile!! As for your query on Blackburn Parish Church, you are correct. This is now the Cathedral. Witton is part of Blackburn these days, although for census purposes it was put with Darwen. CD Archive Books have a CD on the History etc. of Blackburn if you are interested. Also, I have an index to the 1851 census of Darwen and Witton (surname only with cross ref to address). There are no Ormerods listed. What is your connection with Todmorden? Regards Linda

    3. Thanks for the information Linda, from my memory of visiting the graveyard years ago I know some of the gravestones I'm interested in are at the front. I seem to remember them laying flat on a slight slope. My grandparents grave is at the back of the Chapel, I can roughly remember where it is. I know there are other relatives graves in there somewhere. I used to be taken there quite often as a child - how I wish I'd taken more notice of what my father used to tell me about his family! I don't know when I'll manage to get to Clough Foot, but I'll let you know how I get on. 3. Linda, Unfortunately the book is mainly concerned with Fieldens, Stansfields and to a very small extent Greenwoods of Croft House. There isn't an index but a quick look through shows no names you mention. Though Elizabeth Travis' fathers will looked very complicated and interesting. There is a chapter on Women and inheritance. Also chapters on Tenants of Shore and the Quakers of Shore and a very good ref section at the back. Jack

    3. Jack, I'm sure Janet will be delighted with that information as her ancestors spring from Susan daughter of John IV, and she knew nothing of the Fielden line before this week! I wish I had some in my lines now!! Does this book mention any Crossleys or Laws by any chance? Do you have any details of books about Wadsworth area in the 1700's? I am stuck with my 3 x great grandfather, William Crossley, born about 1771 in Wadsworth. Possible father Anthony. William arrived in Walsden when he was about 16 and I know nothing of his previous life. Just a thought! 3. Sally, I have never seen anything quite like the burial ground at Clough Foot. It has to be seen to be believed. The Chapel has been converted into a private house but the grave yard is protected. It is still used as a burial place!! The house stands in the middle of the graves - some of the stones are very close to the front door. As you may know, the Chapel is quite isolated apart from a farm across the road. I don't think I would like to be returning home there late at night!! At the side of the front garden, to the right as you face the house, there is a pathway, through a farm gate, and then on the left a little higher up you will find the entrance. The oldest graves are the ones nearest to the house. Those right at the back are the new ones. The owners of the house try to maintain the graves, and most are in reasonable condition. However!! The owner has several dogs and even more cats, so watch out for the wild life. (All very friendly). She keeps the grass down by letting the sheep out onto it. Her name is Cheryl and she is a lovely lady, if a bit disorganised. She works from home so is there most of the time. She has a massive file on the graves, including photos etc. and will show you where the graves are that you want to see. The grave site is public so there is no reason why you shouldn't just turn up. We did. However, as there is no distinction between the burial ground and the garden you may feel happier if you knocked on the door. It really is worth a visit even if you don't find who you are looking for!! Some of my Laws are there as they lived at Hazelgreave and Mellings farms, a mile or so further on down the lane. Let me know how you go on if you visit it, Linda

    3. Hi Linda There are a lot of my Holt relatives buried at Clough Foot, including my Grandparents. I know the Chapel was converted into private living accommodation some time ago, is there still access to the graves? If there is, and it is by arrangement with the current owners, do you have a contact name and number for them? 3. Linda & Janet, The booklet "Shore in Stansfield" lists the family tree of the Fieldens you mention. John who married Elizabeth Travis of Inchfield is written up as John V it lists all their children and goes back through Johns IV, III, II and I. It only lists 4 children though for John IV, namely Susan, Mary, John and Ann. Further info could be available bearing in mind this weekends discussions. Lots of other trees are included as well as wills etc. Jack (Todmorden) -------Original Message------- From: ENG-TODMORDEN-L@rootsweb.com Date: 07 May 2002 17:16:40 To: ENG-TODMORDEN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-TOD] Re: SHACKLETON Janet, I have found the following, but please be cautious with the dates etc. They should be checked against the registers. I got the baptism and marriage dates from the IGI just to give me an idea of the time period we are looking at. The names came from John Travis apart from Mary Crossley - that was the IGI, but all the children fit in with it being her. Please check if you can. You may also like to get the will that's mentioned. This is a quote from Some Old Walsden Families by John Travis. "John Ffielden of Inchfield made a will in 1757, 26th. November, bequest to Dorothy his wife of furniture, and a farm called Weetshaw in Todmorden, and a cottage adjoining, during her life, and after that to her nephew, John Ffielden, the youngest son of John Ffeilden late of Shore in Stansfield, in the county of York, deceased, by Elizabeth her sister. Sole Executor his cousin Joshua Fielden of Edge End, Todmorden. Joshua renounced probate, and administration was granted to the widow, Dorothy.".................. "....The above Dorothy was probably the daughter of John Travis of Inchfield, being interred at St. Mary's Church, Todmorden, in the same grave...." (THIS MEANS THAT HER SISTER WOULD BE ELIZABETH TRAVIS.) ".......... The last Nicholas (Nick) died in 1821, being descended from the John Ffielden who inherited Wetshaw Farm, Todmorden." The pedigree seems to be: John Fielden of Shore, Stansfield, died before 1757. Married Elizabeth Travis at Halifax on 10 Sept. 1719. Their youngest son, John Fielden, married Mary Crossley, Feb. 1754 at St. Mary's, Todmorden. They had at least 5 children: Susan, baptised 23.3.1755 at Todmorden, born in Walsden, married John Shackleton the eldest. Ann, baptised 4.11.1759 at Todmorden, married John Schofield of Reddishore Nicholas, baptised 27.5.1764 at Todmorden, married Dorothy Crossley 28 Dec. 1786 at St. Chads, Rochdale. Died 1821 John, went to live at Warland Mary, had a natural son, James Fielden, by William Walton. That's about it for now, unless I find something else. Happy Hunting! 2. Kent Kirkham
    3. Thanks to both Anne & Linda for doing some research on the Kirkhams. My Gr. Grandfather's name was William Kirkham. He was born 2 February 1830 in Blackburn, Eng. According to the a March 2000 copy of his first marriage record, on 15 January 1854 he married Ellen Rostrum(?) The penmanship of whomever wrote the copy is not good. William is described as a bachelor with the occupation of "moulder". In the States that would be similar to a tool & die man, I believe. His father's name is listed as Benjamin and Benjamin's occupation is give as Labourer. Ellen's parents are not listed. The wedding was performed in the parish church parish of Blackburn. Is this now the Cathedral Church of St. Mary? Sometime after 1856, Ellen must have died because on 30 September 1860 William Kirkham married Jane Ormerod at St. Mark's, Witton. Jane was born 8 January 1833. Her father was Thomas Ormerod and her mother Nancy Sumner. I can find this family on the 1851 census. Nancy Sumner was descended from Samuel Crompton who invented the Spinning Mule. This descent gave rise to a story in my family about a large estate Due us in Chancery that Jane Ormerod went back to try and collect. Only the facts had been corrupted so that by the time I heard it, the fortune was the result of a wealthy daughter being disinherited after eloping with a groom on the estate. Who knows, but I certainly can't find any record of a wealthy daughter or poor groom in the genealogy. Thought you might enjoy the legend. Kent Kirkham

    3. Kent, I have found some Kirkhams in Darwen in 1851. These were taken from the 2% sample, so there are probably more of them. I hope these are of use to you Regards, Linda BURY FOLD, DARWEN THOMAS/KIRKHAM/HEAD/MARRD/50//LOOM STARTER/LAN/DARWEN/ MARY/KIRKHAM/W/MARRD//48/LOOM STARTERS WIFE/LAN/DARWEN/ JAMES/KIRKHAM/SON/UNMD/14//POWER LOOM WEAVER/LAN/DARWEN/ THOMAS/PRESTON/SON IN LAW/MARRD/23//COLLIER/LAN/DARWEN/ ALICE/PRESTON/SON IN LAWS WIFE/MARRD//25/POWER LOOM WEAVER/LAN/DARWEN/ HENRY/PRESTON/GRANDSON/UNMD/2//AT HOME/LAN/DARWEN/ MARY/PRESTON/GRANDAUR/UNMD//.833/AT HOME/LAN/DARWEN/ BURY FOLD, DARWEN JAMES/KIRKHAM/HEAD/MARRD/54//LABOURER/LAN/OVER DARWEN/ ELLEN/KIRKHAM/W/MARRD//54/LAB WIFE/LAN/PADIHAM/ JANE/KIRKHAM/D/UNMD//26/TWIST WINDER/LAN/PADIHAM/ THOMAS/KIRKHAM/SON/UNMD/25//LABOURER/LAN/PADIHAM/ RICHARD/KIRKHAM/SON/UNMD/23//POWER LOOM WEAVER/LAN/OVER DARWEN/ ELLEN/KIRKHAM/D/UNMD//15/POWER LOOM WEAVER/LAN/OVER DARWEN/ ALICE/KIRKHAM/D/UNMD//13/POWER LOOM WEAVER/LAN/OVER DARWEN/ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anne Curnow" <annejennings@waitrose.com> To: <ENG-TODMORDEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 06, 2002 1:05 PM Subject: [ENG-TOD] Ormerod, Kirkham and Woodhead surnames - searching the censuses Kent, There do seem to be a very few people who were not included in one census or other, but only very few - I have looked for hundreds of people in the censuses, and so far, there is only one family which I have looked for, and found that they definitely were not anywhere in the census. This was the 1881 census, which has a complete index of names, places etc, so I can be certain that the family was not included, as I have searched just for their christian names, as well as their surnames, address, place of birth etc. I have birth certificates for two of their children in the city of London, one just before, and one just after the 1881 census time, so I can be fairly certain they were in England then, and they weren't wealthy enough to be on holiday abroad, so I think the only explanation is that their names were not included in the half a dozen families who lived at the same address as they did at that time. However, it is worth searching further, if you can. By using census indexes, I have found quite a few families living in different places from the ones I expected, and sometimes with differently spelt names. For example, one family in the 1881 census transcript on CD-Rom was transcribed as 'Luckling', when their name was actually 'Suckling', because the capital 'S' looked very much like an 'L' in the writing of the time. It took me a long time before I thought of searching for this spelling! If you could give us more exact details of the families you are searching for in the 1851 census, perhaps someone might come across the family while they are looking for their own ancestors in the census. Let us know the christian names as well as the surnames, and some idea of their age in 1851, and where any particular ones were born or lived in England, if you know.
