    1. [SRY] John SKIMMINGTON aged 10 transported ( 1824 )
    2. From The Morning Chronicle ( London, England ), Tuesday, August 31, 1824; Issue 17276.  SURREY ADJOURNED SESSIONS. Yesterday the Adjourned Session for the County of Surrey was held at Horsemonger-lane, before Robert HEDGER , Esq. Chairman, and several Magistrates. JOHN SKIMMINGTON , aged ten years, stood indicted for stealing two handkerchiefs & a piece of lace, value 37s., the property of John JONES. On the night of the 25th instant the prisoner was observed at the prosecutor's shop window, and having forced his arm through the glass he took the articles before stated, and rolling them up gave them to another.  The prisoner, when asked if he had any witnesses to speak to his character, replied, he could have a very good character.  He was a quack doctor [ loud laughter ].  He then stated, that in former times he had travelled the country with his father and with Madame GAUGOUR , the celebrated strong lady, who lifted up an anvil with the hair of her head, and who would throw a chair over her head with her mouth.  His father is the man who catches the chair when so thrown by Madame.  " I ( continued the prisoner ) I goes about with stuff that takes out grease, paint, pitch, and tar; I also cures warts, your Honour, and gets a good deal of money.  I ask you, therefore, Gentlemen, if I would do such a thing, and if I wanted money I could get it from my father."The Gaoler said that Madame GAUGOUR was the prisoner's mother; for the benefit of her business she was described as Madame.  The Jury found him GUILTY, and the Chairman said, in consideration that he would be much better taken care of than going about the streets, he should sentence him to seven years' transportation.
