    1. [SRY] James Latter-Imposter!!!

    3. Good afternoon, I wonder if the list could possibly cast there eyes over the following? I have spent considerable time trying to get to the bottom of this puzzle to no avail! And would welcome any ideas. My 2nd GGrandparents were James Latter born 1853 Crowborough, Sussex and Rhoda Ann Penticost born 1859 Uckfield, Sussex. They married on 23rd October 1875 at Holy Cross Uckfield and baptise the following children at the same church. James 1876. Rhoda Ann 1878. Elizabeth Eliza 1880. Ellen Louisa 1883. Mary Ann 1885. William 1887 died 1889. James Latter Snr died on 12th June 1888, I have a copy of the death certificate and it states that James was 36 and a farm labourer from Isfield, Sussex. The informant was Rhoda Latter widow of the deceased of Chapel House, Isfield, Sussex. Searching the 1891 census I can find no trace of Rhoda Snr, in fact I can only locate 2 of the children on 1891 census as follows, James aged 14 a plough boy in Framfield, Sussex (census ref. RG12/784/12) and Mary Ann aged 5 listed as niece in the home of John & Ann Simmons at Hurstpierpoint, Sussex. And this is where it gets confusing? On the 1901 census I think I have found the family living in Caterham, Surrey. Census ref: RG13/631/35/61. Rhoda is listed as Rose A and she is with a John W Latter and there daughter Mary Ann, plus another son George born 1893 Hawkhurst, Kent . This came as a complete shock as it looked as if James Latter who had died in 1888 had resurfaced? Age and place of birth fits my James perfectly? I then searched the 1911 census and was shocked to find the family still living in Caterham, Surrey, names listed as James Latter and Rodho Latter, and son George, also in the household is Rhoda's father William Penticost. On the 1911 census they state they have been married for 22 years which means they married in 1888/1889 and they state that they have had 1 child. As you can see this is all very confusing, I know that James Snr died in 1888 so why would somebody be using his name? Even place of birth and age fit perfectly, I have searched for a later marriage for Rhoda to no avail and I cannot locate a birth cert for George? Only 1 record fits and having obtained a copy I was dissapointed as it shows completely different parents? So that's it, try as I might I cannot get my head round this and my only conclusion is that for whatever reason someone was impersonating James Latter. Anyway if anyone can see anything that I've missed or some further guidance I would be extremely grateful. Kind regards Robert
