    3. Hi Shirley, I have only just picked up on this thread because you have mentioned travellers. What is your evidence that they were travellers? I have traveller/gypsy ancestors who were often in the Dorking area (seemed to be one of the places they visited regularly). Most of mine did get married in church - they knew which ones had sympathetic vicars and also used those churches for baptisms. They regularly travelled across Sussex to Kent - probably for hop picking and other harvests. Have you searched the internet on 'Louder family history'? You have probably seen this already http://genforum.genealogy.com/lowder/. There doesn't seem to be much on Sowder - I have done various transcriptions in the past and an old fashioned L is often mistaken for an S. If you can give me a few more details I'll have a look in my R&TFHS stuff and see if there is anything relevant. hth, Anne > From: samuelphillips@myactv.net > To: eng-surrey@rootsweb.com > Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2013 17:02:50 -0500 > Subject: Re: [SRY] 1851 census > > > Hi Nivard, thank you again for your help. 3. Dear Anne, Mainly I am researching BENSON starting with my Gt.Grandmother Sarab Benson christened in Godalming Parish 16 July, 1846. She was the illegitimate daughter of Mary Benson born in Horsham and christened in Shermanbury, Sussex on 28 March, 1824. Mary went on to marry a John Lindsey and have other children. Mary's parents were Thomas and Ann Benson. Thomas was born around 1790 in Ewell, Surrey? I have him on the 1841 census class H0107 piece 718 book 16, Parish Teddington, enumeration district 10, Folio 26, page 3. On the 1951 census class H0107 piece 1598 Folio 172 page 32, in Dorking. On the 1961 census Class RG9 piece 440 Folio 18, page 19. The reason I think they were travellers is because they moved around so much, on two of the census they are listed as living in tents, and their occupations are listed as travelling brush makers. Jethro and Jemima Louder are also listed on the 51 census right below the Bensons. Jemima was a child of Thomas Benson and appeared on Sarah Bensons wedding certificate as a witness (very clearly named Jemima Louder not Souder) also Abraham her brother. Thank you for your interest, any comments are welcome. Shirley in Maryland, born in London, used to live in Horley, Surrey. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anne Capewell" <alc_goytre@hotmail.com> To: <eng-surrey@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 13, 2013 1:12 PM Subject: [SRY] FW: 1851 census > > Hi Shirley, > > I have only just picked up on this thread because you have mentioned > travellers.
