Nivard, thank you so much for your replies. These Bensons have given me all kinds of problems. You all helped me once before finding the marriage of Sarah Benson to Thomas West. When I sent for the marriage certificate the witnesses were Jemima Louder and Abraham Benson. These names appear on the census you looked at for me so I am thinking that that is a good indication I have the right Benson. I am sorry I didn't give you enough info on the 1951 census. I also found him on the 1941 census Class H0107 piece 716 book 16 Parish Teddington District 10 Folio 26 page 3. (thats where I had the year he was born from) he says yes to being born in the county of the census (Middlesex) then on the 1951 census he gives no place of birth, and then on the 1961 census he says he was born in Ewell, Surrey. Sarah b. 1846 Godalming Surrey, was the illegitimate child of Mary Benson b. 1824 in Horsham, Sussex, daughter of Thomas and Ann Benson. Sarah did not give a father on the wedding cert. so it does seem to fit together. I would really appreciate your comments on whether I am on the right trail, my son and I have been trying to put the pieces together on this for a long time. Thank you for your time, I see you help so many people. Hi Nivard, thank you again for your help. Its an interesting idea about Jemima but in fact I think Jemima and Abraham were brother and sister. On the 1841 census she is transcribed as Jennie but I am sure her name is Jemima. I will try to see if Amelia Louder is Jethro Louder's sister. That would make sense as Jethro Louder and Jemima were living in the same encampment as the Bensons. The census lists Jemima as Jethro's "wife" but I cannot find a marriage. Would it be common for travellers to just be common law wives. It seems they baptised their children so would they be married in church also? Lots more checking for me to do!!! Thanks so much for your input, Shirley. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nivard Ovington" <ovington1@sky.com> To: <eng-surrey@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 09, 2013 6:44 PM Subject: Re: [SRY] 1851 census > Hi again > > I am wondering if your Jemima LOUDER is in fact Amelia LOUDER ? > > England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index, 1837-1915 about Abraham Benson > Name: Abraham Benson > Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1872 > Registration district: Dorking > Inferred County: Surrey > Volume Number: 2a > Page Number: 206 > > England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index, 1837-1915 about Amelia Sowder > Name: Amelia Sowder > Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1872 > Registration district: Dorking > Inferred County: Surrey > Volume Number: 2a > Page Number: 206 > > (is SOWDER actually LOWDER wrongly spelled LOUDER) > > England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915 about Amelia Louder > Name: Amelia Louder > Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1851 > Registration district: Dorking > Inferred County: Surrey > Volume: 4 > Page: 153 > > Abraham appears in 1881 b1849 (perhaps to narrow the age gap with his > wife) with wife Amelia b1851 Dorking > > Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > On 09/01/2013 21:06, Samuel Phillips wrote: >> Nivard, thank you so much for your replies.
