    3. Hi, I am new to this list so hello to all. I am completely baffled by the following and wondered if a fresh pair of eye's may see something I'm missing? My 2nd GGrandparents were James Latter born 1853 Crowborough, Sussex and Rhoda Pentecost born 1859 Uckfield, Sussex. James & Rhoda have the following children, all baptised in Uckfield Holy Cross James 1876, Rhoda Ann 1878, Elizabeth Eliza 1880, Ellen Louisa 1884, Mary Ann 1886, William 1887. I have found James,Rhoda and 3 of the above children on the 1881 census( Ref: RG11/1055/59/11) living in Fletching, Sussex. In 1888 James dies, I have a copy of his death cert and it states that James Latter died of cardiac problems, that he was a farm labourer from Isfield aged 36, the informant was the widow of deceased Rhoda Latter. I cannot locate Rhoda or any of the above children on 1891 census? ( James born 1876 is a plough boy in Fletching aged 14) In 1901 I have found this family, I think, living in Caterham, Surrey ( Ref: RG13/631/35/61 ) but Rhoda has changed her name to Rose A Latter and she is with a John W Latter, John's birthplace and age match James? Also they have 2 children with them, George born 1893 Hawkhurst, Kent and Mary Ann born 1886, I was aware of Mary Ann but George was new to me, Again the age and birthplace of Mary Ann fit . In 1911 the family are still living in Caterham( Ref: RG14/226/3248) but John W Latter in the 1901 census has become James Latter, birthplace and age fit my James??? My question is obvious, who could this be with Rhoda? I have searched for a marriage after the death of James in 1888 but nothing, on 1911 census James & Rhoda state they have had 1 child, George 1893 and that they have been married for 22 years, this gives a date of 1889? Was someone impersonating James? Or was there one hell of a coincidence and Rhoda married another James Latter who was also born the same time in the same place? Very very unlikely. Anyway if anyone can see something I'm missing or have some guidance I would be extremely grateful. Kind regards Robert

Hallo Who completed the household schedule in 1911? The name is in the right hand bottom corner. Are you absolutely sure Rhoda and Rose are the same person? They may not be. Perhaps getting George J's birth certificate will confirm whether his mother is Rhoda or Rose. Rhoda could have misinterpreted the information being asked for and included her late husband or the person who did complete it made the mistake. It is possible Rhoda did marry another James LATTER of the same place and age. It was not unusual for brothers to name their children the same as each others. It causes a lot of confusion. Did James have a brother or cousin named John W? Have you looked at the possibility Mary Ann was staying, not necessarily living, with her aunt and uncle, despite being given in the summary book as a daughter? Have you found a marriage for a John W LATTER or a Rhoda LATTER? Remember hey may not have married in England or Wales. If anything can go wrong, it will. Connie in London
