    3. Hallo John It sound as though you have already checked the census returns for the Godstone area and not found these two gentlemen in residence with their families. You may already be aware that the Godstone registration district includes Caterham, which had two large groups of transient residents. The first was the barracks - The Guards and others, and the second was one of the large London Lunatic Asylums. 'The Imbeciles Asylum at Caterham was one of the first institutions erected by the Metropolitan Asylums Board which had been set up in 1867 to administer care for certain categories of the sick poor in metropolitan London.' Taken from Peter Higgenbotham's excellent workhouse site at http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?MAB-Caterham/MAB-Caterham.shtml Although established for 'imbeciles' the hospital did accept some patients who were mentally ill. Examination of the certificates would be helpful, but it gets expensive checking up on all 'your' large family. It is possible that somebody has one or both of these men in their tree, but has discounted their deaths on the assumption that the location does not fit with the rest of their family histories.
