    3. I believe that the name of Guildford comes from 'golden ford' and below St Catherines the River Wey is sufficiently shallow to be forded and the sand at that point is 'golden'. The pilgrims route was almost as Michael said but the way does not go via Newlands Corner itself but uses a more level path in the valley south of Newlands Corner.
