Hi Fionnghal, Thanks for your useful comments.. I had a look at the sites you mentioned but unfortunately I did 'nt find him. I 'll contact the Imperial War Museum and see if they can help. I do have a photo of his gravestone in the Heilly Station Cemetery in France. It was taken by a friend whose own relative was buried there. I must admit that I was taken by surprise and slightly disappointed to find the names of two other men, from different regiments to his own , written on his gravestone. L 'Chaim. Patrick Holland. . So your man may not actually be listed on one though i hope you find he was. Some private firms listed their lost employees on a plaque inside their place of work. Unfortunately, when the firm changed hands, it was not unknown for said plaque to be binned by the incoming organisation who had no link to the people concerned. A horrifying concern be you a family researcher or no but it does happen. > > try this site and see if he crops up: > UK National Inventory of War Memorials [UKNIWM] > http://www.ukniwm.org.uk/ > As i find the site quite slow on my computer, here's a shortcut to the search page: > http://www.ukniwm.org.uk/server/show/nav.002006002 > > Channel 4's Lost Generation Names created an online database of war memorials but it seems to have disappeared. It was quite good as users could contribute information on their local war memorial incl. photos and transcription and grid reference. We sent in our local one. I'm not sure if they intend making it available again or not. Some suggest it has been closed, however, i suspect it is the above UKNIWM site in disguise :-) > > le durachd > > Fionnghal > > > > *************************************** > Send your List messages using **PLAIN TEXT** and always **TRIM AWAY** superfluous old messages in replies. > > List Admin can be contacted at: Eng-Surrey-admin@rootsweb.com. > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ENG-SURREY-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > >
