Hi all, Thought I would post this again There's been some chatter about cemetery's of late and thought I would ask. My grandfather lived at 204 Selhurst Road,Norwood and my parents were married just down the road at the Holy Innocents Church in 1941. I imagine that the West Norwood Cemetery would be the likely place for his burial sometime after 1941 (family lore states after 1955) , but I have never been able to find his death in years of looking. The Hillier name being common and the deriviatives are mind boggling..... Can someone tell me whether or not West Norwood Cemetery is the likely last repose for my Grandad? Or is their another......I believe (if my brother is right) that he died when I was a toddler, so around 1956,7,8. It seems on google maps that it's only 3.2 miles away from their last know address so seems likely. many thanks in advance Cheers Pam from Adelaide Australia
Hi Pam, Do you have access to the GRO indexes on Ancestry ? If you can find his death registration (Norwood seems to have been in Ealing Registration District from 1947), that will give you a year to work on. If you then get the certificate, that will give the place of death. Hi Anne yes I have had ancestry access for a number of years now and have been looking for his death for about 10 years or more..... from all the online sites.... 1955........and after. Therein lies the problem. That and the amount of deriviatives of the surname.....Being in Oz like you......we rely on being able to order the certs from online access.....and no joy. So I was hoping to find the most likely Cemetery to where they lived and email them directly. I'ts just another small brickwall, using a toothbrush and a prayer. Grin !!! With all the chitchat about cemeteries, I was hoping someone local would know where he would have been buried around 1955 onwards. Thanks anyway hon Pam from Adelaide Australia > Hi Pam, > Do you have access to the GRO indexes on Ancestry ? You are probably aware but Norwood near Southall in west London (in LB Ealing) is not the same Norwood as those in south London (which are West Norwood, Upper Norwood and South Norwood in LB Lambeth, Croydon and Croydon respectively). Hi Pam you may have to extend your search further as my neighbour when I lived in Croydon had his wife buried in Bandon Hill Cemetery which comes under Sutton Council. In Croydon we have Croydon Crematorium & Cemetery which is also divided into 2 parts namely Mitcham Road Cemetery ( Old Cemetery )opened around 1895 where my son is buried, and Thornton Road Cemetery ( New Cemetery )which is the new cemetery with a crematorium. We also have Queens Road Cemetery opened 1861, and we also have Greenlawn Memorial Park, Chelsham Road, Warlingham, Surrey, CR6 9EQ opened 1947. You can contact them via email at mailto:bereavement@croydon.gov.uk. They can be very helpful there but they are destroying old graves which they consider neglected so you may have problems locating any grave but they will have records that will tell you where your grave is if they were buried there. I have the same problem as neither Croydon nor Sutton nor Streatham seems to have my Grandfather and he died about a mile from the cemetery gates. I hope this helps. Colin Parker
Hi Pam it could be Elmer's End Cemetery (Beckenham) you could get to it off Portland Road South Norwood family friends went there in the 50s and 60s they lived in Sidney Road South Norwood Jean in Perth W.A. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pam Hillier" <pamhillier24@virginbroadband.com.au> To: <eng-surrey@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 01, 2009 4:21 PM Subject: [SRY] CEMETERY HELP NORWOOD......please - William James Hillier(1871) > > > Hi all, > Thought I would post this again > There's been some chatter about cemetery's of late and thought I would > ask. > My grandfather lived at 204 Selhurst Road,Norwood and my parents were > married just > down the road at the Holy Innocents Church in 1941.
