Hi I actually emailed a Catholic Church that i thought might hold the key to a problem I had and they were very helpful. If you can narrow down the church they may have belonged to using Baptismal data. LDS are not always (rarely to my knowledge) allowed to film the Catholic records as you might be aware. Check the LDS LIbrary Catalogue as you may be lucky. I have struck out this way for the most part. But St Mary's itself has some records being put up on ancestry (these are C of E) Have you checked the St mary's records on ancestry or through PR? You don't say his name or how you can be certain you need Catholic records. A little more information may elicit a little more help. Thanks for your reply, Pam. My convict's name was Charles Wooderson born c1814-1818 (depending on which record you consult). His tranportation papers indicate that he was Roman Catholic, although, given no choice in the new colony, he later became C of E. Also on these records it indicates he could read and write, but later indications are that he couldn't. So I am not taking anything at face value. I shall look at the LDS Library Catalogue regardless. Could you enlighten me as to what PR stands for? Parish Records?? He was convicted in St Mary's Lambeth, so given few other clues as to his origins, I thought I would start in this parish and expand. Some records say he was born in Carlisle and others say London. No parents names are given. I think I have a long search ahead. Thank you very much for your advice and help. Any other advice or researchers of this name feel free to post. Hi Louise Being more specific about what you need and what you have researched will get more people offering assistance Louise. This is much better because we now know his approx dates of birth and more importantly his name. 1. Carlisle and London are at opposite ends of the Country .......are you sure there are not "two" Charles Woodersons??? 2. PR is indeed parish Records and BT is Bishops transcripts (hand written copies of the original PR's sent to the Bishop of the Diocese for safe keeping). 3. I am not sure whether a shoe maker (variously called a cordwainer) has a formal apprenticeship but I am certain some other lister will know. 4. Watermen and Lightermen - There is a searchable Parish register database on this website and also one of the chappies that participate in the website has put together a Cd of Watermen and Lightermen apprenticeships. http://www.parishregister.com/parish_shop/default.asp?CatID=57 - to purchase the waterman Cd I am pretty certain my cousin in the Uk purchased it via this website. It also has some wonderful information on researching Watermen etc. http://www.parishregister.com/aboutstp.html Watermen carried goods and Lightermen carried people if I recall correctly. It's interesting to note (I have a few watermen) that they are a clicky bunch and tended to apprentice within the family. Although I have had some that apprentice themselves to their in laws. If you find his apprenticeship as a waterman you may well hit the motherload and find a family that you can trace that way. 5. I found on ancestry an offence of Larceny for a Charles Wooderson where he was imprisoned for three weeks by the Clerkenwell (Middlesex) July Sessions.......1832 If this is the same Charles Wooderson then his second offence (where he was likely sent to the colonies) happened after this. Clerkenwell and Lambeth are only 2.6 miles (4.1 kilometres) apart. So it's likely him. Sending a copy off list. 6. On the 1841 census there is a Mary wooderson 45, laundress of 18 Union street, Lambeth in Lambeth district born circa 1796. 1841 census was rounded up or down by 5 years, so this is approximate. Possibly a widow. In fact there are quite a few Woodersons that could possibly be a parent or siblings in Middlesex too. 7. Have you got ALL the information you can gather for his conviction.....indent papers, the ship he was brought to Australia on, the Criminal register etc etc etc......... 8. this is a good site for convicts if you don't have it already (which you might) http://www.convictcentral.com/index.html and this http://www.sfhg.org.uk/ausnz_sites.html Hope some of this helps.....yell if you need more help. Nothing much coming up on ancestry for him, but if you find his parents..... Cheers Pam from Adelaide Australia Thanks for your reply, Pam.
