The Royal College of Physicians keep a biographical database of Members of the Royal College of Physicians (not all doctors, like surgeons, were therefore on it) called Monks Roll. I am sure their librarian would be amenable to looking. The British Medical Journal has recently put online archived issues from 1840 on http://www.bmj.com/archive/ which is useful if the person concerned has a relatively unusual name.
