Hello Richard, My Whittingtons appear to be a one off mob, my earliest proven sighting is in the 1850's, in the Bristol area, George Whittington the Hatter married at Bristol in 1856, first two children born in London, then in Bristol , Western Super Mare, and finally to Middlesex total issue twelve.I have what I like to think is George the Hatter and his sister Eliza on the 1841 census at Lower Langford near Burrington, Somerset, but no parents listed, George's marriage certificate has his father as John Whittington (Hatter) He must be a phantom as I cannot find him. Eliza's marriage certificate says father's name is Henry, but on the passenger list of the ship she came to Australia it states her parents as George and Sarah Baptists deceased, all very confusing. Their father whatever his name was may have had siblings ,( another brick wall I have been banging my head on for years,)if he did then maybe there are cousins out there who may have connections to your Rebecca. I see you are from Bromley, one of my ancestors on my mothers side was buried at Bromley in the 1700's, she was Mary Palmer (nee Barry) wife of Edward Palmer Vicar of Ringmer and Chalvington in Sussex. Hello Peter, Thank you for your reply. As you say, a link cannot be established at present. However, I will keep your email on file just in case. Whittington is less common than Brown and it may be easier to establish links. Some potential links, blocked by brick walls, can be intriguing. For example, Rebecca married William Joliffe Cooke. On my paternal side, the second name given to children was often the surname of an ancestor. As yet, I cannot establish a link with the Joliffes - a well to do family of landowners from Merstham just North of Reigate. This family suffered a number of tragedies with early deaths by accidents etc all recorded on memorials in St Katherine's Church, Merstham. Incidentally, the term "Brick Wall" has extra significance for me. About 4 generations of my paternal ancestors were brickmakers! With best wishes Richard Brown Bromley, Kent U.K. ________________________________ From: Peter <dance_123@bigpond.com> To: eng-surrey@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, 28 October, 2009 8:30:16 Subject: Re: [SRY] Whittington Family Hello Richard, My Whittingtons appear to be a one off mob, my earliest proven sighting is in the 1850's, in the Bristol area, George Whittington the Hatter married at Bristol in 1856, first two children born in London, then in Bristol , Western Super Mare, and finally to Middlesex total issue twelve.I have what I like to think is George the Hatter and his sister Eliza on the 1841 census at Lower Langford near Burrington, Somerset, but no parents listed, George's marriage certificate has his father as John Whittington (Hatter) He must be a phantom as I cannot find him.
