Central Coast, NSW, Australia ---- Hi List, Firstly, I'd like to say a big thank you to Andy and Caroline for answering my above query, and for giving such complete and knowledgeable answers, it is much appreciated and I learned a lot from them. Andy the 1841C reference was as follows: 1841C (Ref:H0107/727 8 enumeration Schedule no.6 page 5 - line 12) for the City of London and the Parish of St.Giles, Cripplegate living at Beech Street, Barbican was: Jane NEATE 65 Born in the County...N Seemingly in the same house, although not shown as living with her in the census record below were: A U BRYANT 35 Tin Plater ? Born in the County....Y Ann BRYANT 70 Ind Born in the County....N Ann KINDlE ? 64 Born in the County....Y John FIELD 19 M.S. Born in the County.....N AU was Adam Uriah Bryant who was Jane's nephew and her sister was Ann (nee Arkinstall)Bryant. Jane's husband's name was James and it appears that he was deceased before the 1841C and her sister Ann Bryant died in the Sept Qtr of 1841. (Uriah, Ann's husband gets mentions in some "Old Bailey" proceedings.) So it looks like the death certificate I purchased wasn't for my Jane Neate, so it's back to the drawing board with her. Written family history says that her grand nephew Francis Arkinstall, grandson of her brother Adam who was in the Caribbean, was sent back to London in the 1820's to be raised by his grandfather Adam Arkinstall and his aunt Mrs. Neate. Do you have any suggestions for me as to how I go finding out the truth? Many thanks, Robyn Arkinstall. Central Coast, NSW, Australia
Hi Robyn Despite the fact that the will I mentioned earlier describes Jane as a spinster, I wouldn't rule her out altogether, as NEATE is really quite an unusual name. Moreover, I now see a will for a Thomas ARKINSTALL, Shoemaker, which might just establish a connection to the shoe trade. James NEATE's will is also there, I think, proved in 1831. You have some lovely, distinctive names to play with there! And the family seems to have been of enough substance to have had property to bequeath, so you may find yourself downloading quite a number of PCC wills - they can, if you are lucky, be an absolutely wonderful resource. Hope this helps Caroline > -----Original Message----- > From: eng-surrey-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-surrey- > bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Robyn & Bill Arkinstall > Sent: 12 October 2009 14:50 > To: Eng-Surrey@rootsweb.com > Subject: [SRY] Mortlake Shoemaker's Asylum > > Can anyone please give me further information on the Asylum, which when > > I looked for it on the net, I found it listed as an Alms house type > > accomodation?
