    3. Hi Robyn These almshouses were founded and run by the Master Boot and Shoemakers' Provident and Benevolent Institution, which later became the Boot Trade Benevolent Society and now seems to be known as "Footwear Friends" (http://www.fbscharity.org.uk/history.php). Your lady's husband (or possibly father, brother or son) would almost certainly have had to have been in that trade for her to qualify for this housing. There seem to be some records of the charity in the Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section (see http://www.history.ac.uk/gh/21.htm). The access situation for these records is slightly complicated at the moment, as the Manuscripts Section is undergoing major refurbishment and most of the staff have temporarily relocated (with some of their records) to the LMA. But as you are "down under", it would make most sense for you to email them (at manuscripts.guildhall@cityoflondon.gov.uk) for advice. Hope this helps Caroline > > Can anyone please give me further information on the Asylum, which when > I looked for it on the net, I found it listed as an Alms house type > accomodation?
