Thanks for your most helpful reply, Caroline. I had reached the conclusion that Emily, as well as her Uncle Henry, may have been out of the country for many years. As I have now found Henry John HASKEW living in Westminster in 1871 as new records are added, I thought maybe Emily could now be found as well. I had found a shipping arrival in Liverpool from Valparaiso in Chile for an E HASKEW (nurse) in 1897 (the year of the death of Emily's mother.) Another document I have records Eleanor LAWRENCE, Emily's Auntie in Chile, as stating that she would like an English school in Concepcion so that her youngest daughter would not have to be sent to England for her education. This was in 1878 or a little later when a group of teachers arrived to set up a school there. This makes me think that Emily may have visited but did not remain there for any great length of time. Thanks so much for your assistance. That sounds like a wonderful life and I hope that's how it was for her! jan, It seems possible with the "teacher" bent that perhaps that is where she was....along with her uncle perhaps. In Chile at the school her aunt wanted to establish???? Have you googled Have you checked into the Chile aspect, historically and via rootsweb lists. This might be your avenue if you have (and seem to have) exhausted England. cheers pam > Thanks for your most helpful reply, Caroline. > I had reached the conclusion that Emily, as well as her Uncle Henry, may > have been out of the country for many years. Dear Pam, Thank you so much for your help. I have tried to find records from Chile but haven't had much luck so far. Certainly, the name "Haskew" doesn't appear in anything I've found. The document I have about the proposed English school at Concepcion is from the diary of one of the teachers, Miss Leila WATERHOUSE, who arrived from the US with four companions in 1878 or slightly afterwards. There is no mention of Emily at all despite its being a wonderful blow by blow description of their early days in the city. Prior to that there was no English school in Chile and Eleanor's husband, William LAWRENCE, was against the school, not wanting to damage his business with the Catholics ( just about everyone) as he was a Wine Merchant. His father, another William, died in 1855 in Brixton, Surrey and was also a Wine Merchant. Eleanor and William LAWRENCE were married in Lambeth in 1845 and William became secretary of the Masonic Lodge at Concepcion after he arrived there with his wife and children in 1854. Eleanor and William's eldest son, it is documented, had recently returned from school in England in 1869 and was acting as a volunteer fireman in Valparaiso when he died after being hit by burning, falling timber. Many of the businesses in the City were destroyed but the damage could have been much worse. A portrait of William LAWRENCE hangs in the firefighters museum in Valpo and appears on their website. It is the same person, without a doubt, whose photo has been handed down through our family in my great grandfather's album. The other thing which I've just remembered is that the Bank of England Museum has records that Henry HASKEW worked there without a break until his retirement at 65 (in the 1890s). He, too, may have been away in Europe at census time. Are there more census records still to be transcribed? Can you suggest any other sources for Chile records at all. Thanks so much for your advice, Jan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pam Hillier" <pamhillier24@virginbroadband.com.au> To: <eng-surrey@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 05, 2009 5:17 PM Subject: Re: [SRY] HASKEW > jan, > It seems possible with the "teacher" bent that perhaps that is where she > was....along with her uncle perhaps.
