    3. Hi Jan So far as I am aware, there are no census records sitting awaiting transcription! But there are a number of chunks and smaller sections which are "missing presumed lost for ever". It is sometimes all too easy to forget that the census is just a snapshot of who was where on one single night. Just because someone is enumerated in a household, one should not assume they were necessarily actually *living* there. When family members visited, they would be classed as "sister" (or whatever), though they might just have been spending the night in the guest room on their way somewhere else, rather than forming part of the actual household. Have you managed to find wills for every single member of the family who died during the gap you are trying to fill? Emily might have been mentioned in the will of even a relatively distant relative, even if this was just to leave her a token amount or item of jewellery etc. Any such reference may well provide an address. HTH Caroline Are there more census records still to be > transcribed? 3. Dear Caroline, As always your reply has presented me with some new ideas and suggestions. Thanks for that. I'm not sure whether you 're thinking that perhaps some of Emily's family were not actually siblings or aunts etc. My original source for the HASKEW family was a handwritten tree prepared by a relative in England. She says that she began with the family bible in which the two generations we are concerned with at the moment are recorded. She claimed to have "done" the family tree which I understood to mean that she had found the parish records for each person. Certainly, all the dates have been correct for the certificates I've purchased so far. Some of the addresses are not exactly what is on the certificate but most of the earlier generation have a street number and name included. A few of the Wills have been obtained by family members so I'll try and find an address for Emily on one of those. Your help is greatly appreciated, Jan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Caroline Bradford" <caroline.bradford@btinternet.com> To: <eng-surrey@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 05, 2009 6:34 PM Subject: Re: [SRY] HASKEW > Hi Jan > > So far as I am aware, there are no census records sitting awaiting > transcription! 3. Hi Jan No, I wasn't suggesting that you had the relationships wrong, simply pointing out that just because someone appears to be "living" at an address in one census then a different one in another, that does not mean that one, or either, is their actual home. For instance, even though Emily was enumerated in the same household as her uncle, she could have been *living* elsewhere (abroad even) but happened to be staying in his house just for that one night. It was really a general point, for everyone to bear in mind when considering census information. It is easy to forget that our ancestors had lives in between the censuses! The age-old advice about brick walls is to go round them, rather than banging your head on them. Sometimes the wall may seem like it goes on forever, but even the Great Wall of China has two ends. In family history terms, going round a wall to reach the other side tends to involve researching the family in its widest sense. Spinster ladies have a habit of turning up, not just in wills, but as witnesses at weddings etc. And a cousin who may look distant from the point of view of your tree (and may not be a HASKEW) may have been a good friend. One other possibility which springs to mind is that she might have become (or perhaps, rather, tried to become) a nun at some point. Doesn't help you much though! Best wishes Caroline > -----Original Message----- > From: eng-surrey-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-surrey- > bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Neil & Jan Hearn > Sent: 05 October 2009 12:57 > To: eng-surrey@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [SRY] HASKEW > > Dear Caroline, > As always your reply has presented me with > some new ideas and suggestions.
