Richard - An name index would only be useful if you were looking for an Officer as most Other Ranks O.R.(s) weren't named unless they were charged for an offense or got mentioned in the daily dispatches etc. Usually some like this would be recorded - 10 O.R.s were killed in action today. My grandfather Abraham Cannell was in the 1st Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment. He had returned to the WW1 from where he was living in Alberta, Canada. He lost a leg in 1917 and was released. I have hard copies of the diaries and have found them extremely interesting as to how they lived in the trenches etc but not very helpful as to name him by name.
