Hi Could anyone tell me if Alverstoke, Hampshire would be in the ancient county of Surrey in 1852. I am hoping to find a will for a person that died in Alverstoke in 1852. Thank you Maureen in Canada
Hi Maureen Absolutely not! Alverstoke is and always has been in Hampshire (though that county was, for a time, also known as "Southamptonshire" or "The County of Southampton"). Where your chap's will was proved will largely depend on where he owned property, rather than where he died. If in Hampshire, then try the Hampshire Archives online catalogue at http://www3.hants.gov.uk/archives/catalog.htm. Alternatively, his will may have been proved by the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC) (especially if he also owned property elsewhere). You can search these at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/.
