Dear Listers Some months ago I asked if anyone had any information to share about the burial ground that served Caterham Asylum/St. Lawrence's Hospital between 1914 and 1964. I attach the original message here. "Chaldon Parish Community Group is planning some restoration of the old burial ground situated west of the site of St Lawrence's Hospital.? This was the Hospital's second burial site, opened in 1914 but no longer used after 1964.? It is accessible by footpath only and has been sadly neglected over the past decade, become overgrown with brambles and scrub and used as a dumping ground.? Potentially it is a beautiful site and the remains of some gravestones can still be seen. I have noticed in the archive for this list that there was some correspondence some years ago.??I am?keen to hear from anyone who remembers this burial ground or has relations or aquaintances who were buried there.? It would be particularly interesting to find some photographs. Please get in touch if you have any knowledge of the site - first hand or anecdotal." We have started some restoration of the site with the help of the Downlands Conservation Trust. Several memorials have been uncovered and I have now a list of all names to be seen at the Burial Ground. The surnames are: Howcroft, (Cleghorn), Udy, Houghton, Hazell, Wise, Hale, Millward, Barnes, Hill, Nash. If you have a personal interest in any of these names I can give you a bit more information with a photo of the memorial stone. Information varies considerably. Liz
