    3. Hi Kas Whilst finding the *record* of your ancestor's burial is indeed very satisfying, you should not necessarily assume that there will be a physical grave for you to visit, let alone a legible headstone. The churchyard at St Giles Camberwell does still exist (though like many it is now effectively a public park), and I believe many of the stones have been removed. I wouldn't want to deter you from visiting the site - just don't raise your hopes up too high! Best wishes Caroline > > Hi Nivard > > yes that's him , my ggg gfather Edward TANNER > > and I am thrilled to bits to find his burial and also his wife Sarah > TANNER > in 1849 at St Giles > > I'm coming to london end of jan so might be worth a visit > > thanks for the web sites > > cheers > > kas > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Nivard Ovington" <ovington1@sky.com> > To: <eng-surrey@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Tuesday, January 05, 2010 12:05 AM > Subject: Re: [SRY] ancestry burial query > > > > Hi Kas > > > > I would say so yes > > > > Interesting address isn't it ! > > > > Burials in the Parish of St Giles Camberwell in the County of Surrey > in > > the > > year 1845 > > > > Edward TANNER - Pudding Lane London - 19th May - 52 yrs - H W C HYDE > > Curate > > > > Is your Edward TANNER the one in 1841 enumerated as a Ship Agent ? > > > > A couple of interesting sites on St Giles > > > > http://www.stgilescamberwell.org.uk/ > > > > <http://www.mooseyscountrygarden.com/english-gardens/saint-giles- > churchyard-gardens.html> > > > > Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > > > > > > > > > List Admin can be contacted at: Eng-Surrey-admin@rootsweb.com. > > > > > > ------------------------------- > > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > > ENG-SURREY-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the > > quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > > > > *************************************** > Send your List messages using **PLAIN TEXT** and always **TRIM AWAY** > superfluous old messages in replies. > > List Admin can be contacted at: Eng-Surrey-admin@rootsweb.com. > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ENG-SURREY- > request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in > the subject and the body of the message

    3. Thank you for sharing that information. It certainly served as a reminder to me. Am I correct in 'remembering' that Streatham Cemetery (the one on Garrett Lane) removes headstones/remains after 100 years to 'recycle' the area? 3. Veronica you cannot go by the 100 year rule as Croydon is destroying graves that are a lot younger than 100 years. They are also helping graves to deteriorate quicker due to the lack of vegetation removal that they say is a conservation areas. This is not needed at the Mitcham Road/Thornton Road cemeteries as there is Common land adjoining the cemetery. This is just a case of cost cutting over the last 20 years.
