Can anyone tell me which registration district the church of St Marks, Kennington would have been in in the 1840's? Hi Kas Whilst finding the *record* of your ancestor's burial is indeed very satisfying, you should not necessarily assume that there will be a physical grave for you to visit, let alone a legible headstone. The churchyard at St Giles Camberwell does still exist (though like many it is now effectively a public park), and I believe many of the stones have been removed. I wouldn't want to deter you from visiting the site - just don't raise your hopes up too high! Thank you for sharing that information. It certainly served as a reminder to me. Am I correct in 'remembering' that Streatham Cemetery (the one on Garrett Lane) removes headstones/remains after 100 years to 'recycle' the area? Veronica you cannot go by the 100 year rule as Croydon is destroying graves that are a lot younger than 100 years. They are also helping graves to deteriorate quicker due to the lack of vegetation removal that they say is a conservation areas. This is not needed at the Mitcham Road/Thornton Road cemeteries as there is Common land adjoining the cemetery. This is just a case of cost cutting over the last 20 years.
