My dad lived in Furley Street , Peckham as a young lad. Does anyone have any idea where I could get information about the schools that where in his area at that time. I would very much like to look at the archives. Thank you Madeleine
Hi Madeline Furley Street - these days called Furley Road and the section between Fenham Rd and Goldsmith Rd, on one side of the road the old houses are still there 2 streets east is Friary Road with the school at the junction of Frairy and Fenham Rds Still there and very visible on Google Map ...drag the little man down and you can walk round the school in the 1940/50s it was both both infants and juniors ...I went there! Hi Madeleine The 1907ish "Board School Map" (West Surrey FHS CD) shows Furley street and Marmont road is two streets to the east (they both run more or less north-south). Here was "The Peckham Park" an LCC Elementary School. A centre for Laundry and Woodwork was attached. Further south, across Goldsmith road and further east along the latter was Stafford Street school. It was another Elementary, a Wesleyan "non-provided school" (in LCC terms). You wd probably have to have lived west of Hill street (much west of Furley street) to have gone to Sumner Road. Probably Southwark Archives is the place to contact.
